New E55 in snow...

Just curious what people's plans are with E55 and snow? Do they make snow tires for the stock 18's? Also, what size 17" wheels would be good for winter months?

Park it in the garage and drive the Denali.

It doesn't snow here in SoCal but when it rains, I'll do the same -- park it in the garage and drive my 540. My E55 can not, will not, and shall not see rain!

A few months ago [3-4] there were a few discussions on this topic on this list. My personal take from those discussions were that if you do not live in a heavy snow area, all weahter tires should do fine. I am reporting on my reading of other people's views. I have no experience with cars like the new E 55.

As a follow up to my last note. I plan to maintain a second car. But I will look inot all season tires as well. I checked the Tire Rack and found only one set of All season High performance tires for the E 55. I believe they are Pirelli 7000's.

I am also given to understand that all season tires do not damage straight line acceleration which one gets E 55's for. They damage cornering ability not too much of a storng point for the car.

So will I be ok with smaller wheels (17") and snow tires in the winter?

No, they have TireFit.

Also one has to make sure that the winter wheels will clear the front or rear brakes.

I love this car,any car can have serious reliability issues and I still think that so far and currently there is no better product then Mercedes.
I have a problem with how I was dealt with by MBUSA representative and that is the only reason this E55 is my last Benz.

glad you are enjoying the car. I hope it has had no other problems. I agree you were not treated well.

So, will my E55 be fine in snow with 17" wheels and snow tires?

As far as I recall, the 03 E55 has the same disks and calipers as the SL55.

So if you are talking about a 2003 E55 you cannot use 17" rims, only 18" rims will do. Unfortunately, that eliminates most snowtire options as well.

There are virtually no choices. I ended up buying Pirelli Snowsport 240's. Great tires with an excellent ride but will cost about $250 a piece.
Also forget about the staggered setup.

Hope this helps...

Wolf, thanks for the help. What state are you in? Also, what do you mean by the staggered setup?

I have Pirelli Snowsport 240's on original rims. Good snow tires (except on ice) :p

Those all season Pirelli 7000's were rated very low by reviewers in terms of snow capability. I'm probably going with the LM 22 Blizzaks winter tires as a direct fit replacement. I would have preferred a capable high performance all season tire.

PsychoE55, what he ment was he was staggered after he looked at the car, some say because of its drop dead good looks, but i say because he had been drinking the night before and remembered he slept with a goat (however i cant confirm that).

p.s. Gayvid, your excused, and im not your BRAAAAA.

Brushing aside silly posts by kids like the one above,
"staggered" in this case means different size tires for front and rear.(245 front,265 rear in E55).

As Absent already pointed out so aptly, the rear tires are riding on wider rims and rubber.

On the SL55 the front tires are 255's (18/8.5 rims) and the rears are 285's (19/9.5 rims). In snow tires you can only get 255's, nothing else.

At this point, plan at least $1200-$1500 for another set of non-staggered 8.5 rims. With taxes, the setup will run up to $3k.

It may have changed, but last year the number of tire options were exactly 1, no other manufacturer handled the needed size in the US.

Good luck...

Wolfman

Btw, the SL55 did rather well in the snow the few times I had to use it in freezing Minnesota...

My friend drove his SL55 in winter... up here in the rockies, we get a LOT of snow. I'll find out what tires he got. He had no problems with the SL55 in the snow/ice... as long as ESP was on .
