It could be the old style battery vent pipe, just a guess.

If its a new type sealed battery then yes, or just leave it.

Serge, did you install a regular acid or AGM although both will need to be vented via that tube. Look at the end of the battery case there will be a hole, also there should be a 90 degree plastic fitting that will push into the hole, Good Luck.
Tell me did the PCV valve fix your smoke issue?
Also did your ESP straighten out, mine kicked in yesterday after starting, think the brake pedal switch is sometimes failing when using push start function. Usually watch back of garage to see if the brake lights are on but this was in a parking lot in the daytime so I am unsure if the brake light were on or not, but it finally started after a few attempts at pushing the brake and button then the ESP came on but went out on the next start.

your battery will have a vent hole on that side, you can buy the connector to connect the pipe back to the battery

What battery are you fitting, the link may explain why you may or may not require a vent tube.
