clunk on the front driver's side

sometimes when going over bumps or just unloading the brakes, there's a clunk in the front driver's side

brake caliper? tie-rod end?

not sure - just had the thrust bearings replaced a few weeks ago.

Hi guys.. I just joined the forum for the same reason as I have the same problem

It started about 2 weeks ago and I usually get the knocking / thumping sound when driving at low speeds or when I park the car

Highway driving is as smooth as silk

I went to the dealership who asked to keep the car for testing for 3 days

Unfortunately I didn't have another vehicle so I scheduled it for next week

Keep me updated please

Thanks

"3 Days of testing..."??
I'd ask if one of their techs are planning a vacation with it! That's downright silly.

Could be either but lowers typically go out first.

Put it up on jackstands and try and move and wiggle front wheels around. You will see/feel the movement, and will know if it's the upper or lower ball joint or any other worn out part.

Yep. My E and CLS both have had the crunching/creaking driver's front: turned-out to be the bushings.

if it's bushings - are there better parts to use to replace? or just use OEM ones?

Thanks for that tip I'll keep that in mind. That wouldn't have been the first place I'd have looked when mine eventually gets that noise

That's what I thought mine was till I removed the end-links and was hearing the same thing..

I could hear and kinda feel the same clunk from the steering wheel as I gently move the steering right to left when parked or stopped at a light.

I tried raising and lowering the car and it does not go away..

After I changed my front left wheel bearings(could not remove the inner race so I cleaned and reused) now I can only hear and feel the clunk only when I drive for a few miles.

Thinking it needs adjustment after it warms up

And FINALLY...

The Dealership replied with the solution

They said that the bearing and the control arms (both upper and lower) have to be changed and after that they will see if the problem is solved..

In other words they slammed a 5000$ bill in my face and said that they will keep slamming me with more

My car is a 2010 model,, purchased in April 2011

It has 34000 km ONLY

no off roading and strictly no nuisance while driving

Warranty expired about 2 months ago

The service agent said that he will try get in touch with the manufacturer regarding a "good will"!!! Which I do not know what he means

Anyhow I took the car to another workshop "certified Merc mechanic" for a second opinion

Any feedback guys!!!
