Unhappy ran out of gas - CEL now on

so I did some searching and it appears my fuel sender might be bad, at least I think that is the side. I ran out of gas and someone came and we put a gallon in. Car started, drove to the nearest gas station and filled it up completely and it only took 9 gallons....So I need to figure out which side I need to replace. Now my CEL is on (I may run to get that code) and my fuel gauge doesn't work.

And on a side not my fuel gauge is way off as well...

Is there a smell? Leak? I thought those with the fuel sending problems can usually tell from where the smell is coming from and/or there's a leak/puddle build up of fuel. I could be wrong...maybe folks with this problem can chime in.

I guess I can replace both pump and sender but was hoping to replace whichever sends fuel from half tank to empty

Both sides have a sender unit.
