Screw size for rear license plate? 5mm? 6mm?
Anyone happen to know the correct diamter and thread pitch for the rear license plate?
The best I can tell it's either:
M5 x 0.8
M6 x 1.0
I was hoping to pick up some stainless screws, maybe with a nice finishing washer (cup washer) to replace the rusty ones that are on there now.
Sorry for the newb-tech.... but there doesn't seem to be anything in the archives and Toadster doesn't seem to have posted this question yet.

Thanks.
I took a drive over to HomeDepot and they actually had stainless in both M5 and M6 sizes.
They were cheap enough that I bought both and plan to try them out tonight.

The EPC for my E55 says the screws are A 001 990 42 36 and that they are 5M12. I used some from my W202 days which are N 007985 005187 and measure M5x0.8 16mm long.
I also use Plastic License Plate Screw Covers that snap onto the plastic washer under the well greased screw to keep them from getting rusty, and to easily unscrew them later because it certainly is no fun to replace the rivet nuts underneath.

I used M5x0.8 but 14mm long since they did not have 16 long. They worked well.
One of the old screws is stuck and the plate nut that it goes into broke off the body of the car. Anyone knows a work around to getting that screw out?

if theres a little bit of the shank exposed, take a dremel or file and cut a line, spray it down with some penetrating oil, let it soak for a while, take a screwdriver to it.
I had to do this when I snapped a lug bolt as a kid

For my CLS I picked up M6 x 1.0mm x 10mm (I think)
These but in shorter length:
