E63 differential ?, used search

So I've been experiencing a noise/whine coming from the rear of my car for a little bit now. First thought it was the tires as they were getting low so I changed them out. No difference. Then I thought it may be a wheel bearing or parking brake issue. Swapped out for fresh brakes, check parking brake (no abnormal wear) and no difference; checked the wheels, didn't notice any play or feel any abnormal difference. This weekend I changed the diff fluid and that didn't seem to help so I'm just going to swap out the bearings.

I've searched and found part numbers for the two bearings on either side of the differential but they are for the 55. I have tried to find specifics on the differentials and have come up empty. Are the two (the 55 and 63) differentials the same? If so, I have the correct part #s. If not, would anyone happen to know the part #s for the bearings? I would really like to get this done this weekend and not have to take it to a shop.

No one can at least comment on if they would be using the same part numbers? I'm assuming it is the same differential but that is a gut call I'm not prepared to make

I'm not 100% sure what info you are looking for, but as far as the bearings of the E55 and E63 differentials... There is a good possibility they are the same. But, the E63 also has a limited slip diff that would possibly have different bearings. Can you describe the noise your having? There is a possibility it could be a wheel bearing. If you have a place to do this, you can drive the car in a straight line till you hear the noise and swerve heavily left and right causing the vehicles weight to transfer... If your swerve right and the noise goes away then swerve left and the noise comes back and seems worse... This could indicate a right wheel bearing causing the noise (swerve right, weight transfers to the left and taking the load off the noisy bearing causing the noise to go away) ... This is just a though... Changing diff bearings isn't a small job. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions I may be able to help with, I've been an MB tech for 8 years.

E63 uses the same diff., with SL55, which is 2.82,

"E55 & E63 & SL55" sharing the same (housing & bearings & seals),

E55 diff. will fit directly,, if you want to go with it, you will have to reprogramming your TCU to 2.65....

I wouldn't be doing a swap or changing the actual gearing; I just need the bearings. I'm thinking that is where the noise is coming from. I've been looking at going with a LSD as well but didn't want to commit to anything until I could confirm the actual parts I needed; and I didn't want to tear apart the rear end until I knew that the parts I was going to get would fit back in.

Your E63 got "4" bearing & "3" seals,,

*Bearings:-

fronts #s : "230 350 00 49" & "230 350 01 49"

sides #s: "230 350 02 49" & "230 350 03 49"

*Seals:-

front #: "230 997 02 46"

sides #s: "230 997 03 46"

Yea, those are the part # I have for the "side" I just didn't see the E63 listed as a compatible model. It makes it confusing because so many models use the same #. The "front" are the pinion bearings, correct? Is there another name for the "side" bearings other than tapered roller bearings? Again, thanks everyone for the help.

Sometimes MB didn't put part #s in the EPC, to forcing you go to them...,,

yes sure, fronts for the pinion, if you open the diff., for the bearings replaced, you will find that its the same

basic thing as most models,,

"Tapered Roller Bearings", is the only name that can find or appears.....

I'd stick a stethoscope on inner portion of each hub. I have done the diff in a car when it turns out it was a wheel bearing. Not very fun, but it was really hard to tell where the noise was coming from. It sounded like it was coming from the center until I ran it on a lift with the car in drive.
