55K Cooling thread

Hi All,

Lots of people, my self included, come to this site for advice on the M113 motor. One reoccurring theme is cooling. These cars are capable of amazing things but suffer even in moderate heat.

I'm hoping you guys can chime in on your cooling mods and what it takes to get them installed. Also your real time expert opinion. I know there are dozens of threads on DIY, I'm hoping to get a catalog of sorts on cooling.

For example:

MOD: Front mounted Heat Exchanger
Cost: $200-$500 depending on brand
Installation: 1-3 Hours
Expected Idle IAT:
Expected WOT IAT:
Overall rating: 7/10

(or whatever format you think will get the idea across)

Anyhow, I hope you guys chime in. I've been here for 5 years and I'm looking forward to reading what you guys have to say. I hope the new guys appreciate this thread as well.

Hi you are correct, the amount of heat generated from these cars is huge, i have just had installed a homemade KC front mounted tank, the thread with lots more details with data logging graphs shows what happens with a defective pump, an upgrade cm30 and Eurocharged HE, and finally split and KC tank fitted.

Have only had the mod finished yesterday so am still looking at the data.

Hope this helps.

2004 E55 AMG
don't have any numerical data to back up the h/e and pump, but before on a completely stock car, i got 2 or 3 runs before the car fell on its face... literally no power anymore. after, with pulley and tune, i did 5 runs before it started feeling a little slower, but it only felt a little slower. a far cry from falling on its face.

of note, one of the clamps on the hose connected to the h/e failed, so it was leaking... needed to improvise with a clamp the shop had laying around. i chose the PLM h/e because it has provisions for the oil cooler and is supposed to fit without trimming... well turned out my 04 didn't even have one, so that was pointless... as to the fit, it didn't fit perfectly and needs trimming.
