Just how accurate are our oil level sensors?

Did my change last night and gave up after like 4 tries to get the sensor to actually tell me something I wanted to hear. I got her up on the ramps, drained both pans, then put 8 quarts of Mobil 1 0W-40 in. Started her up, backed her down, and immediately pulled her into the garage (decently level) and let her sit for 5 minutes. Initial level: 6.1 Quarts.
Added 1/2 a quart, fired her up, let her idle for 5 minutes, then shut it down and let it cool for 5 minutes. New level 6.8 quarts. Grrr. Added another 1/2 quart, which now totaled the 9 QUARTS that I believe is the factory recommended fill. Performed the steps again and it shows 7.2 Quarts, yet I KNOW I added 9 Quarts. I don't want to overfill. Should I just assume the sensor is old (81,000 miles on my 05), or maybe since I'm STAR lowered the car sits at an angle possibly? She seems to be running fine, but I figured I'd ask since I'm paranoid as hell

Thanks gang.

if i recall correctly, the difference in what you put in and what is read is the rest of the oil is in the torque converter/other oil pan. But since you know you completely drained the oil and put 9 in, you should be fine.

There better not be oil in my Torque converter lol!
That would be ATF.
9 Quarts is 9 Quarts, and that's what's in my engine. Screw the sensor at this point.
