SLK55 or SL55
just poking around looking at these cars - thinking of upleveling the wife's Miata to one of these
pros/cons between them?
looking at R171 (05-09 SLK55) for reference there
not looking to spend the $$ on the SL63 or 65
thoughts? warnings? ideas? :

If she's in a Miata now, the most similar driving experience would yield the SLK as the appropriate choice. I would imagine repairs are slightly less costly as well.

haha - she has a magic spell to ward off attention
LOL - I could live with that - then I'd have to get a Weistec kit
agreed, the SLK seems like a more balanced car - granted SLK or SL - they're both sub 5-second cars...
she's gotten overly comfortable in the E55 lately...

SL55 has ABC... you will spend more repairing ABC, then you may have spent on the E55. All else maintenance is similar to the E.
I have driven both, if she enjoys the nimbleness of the miata, the SLK55 is the way to go

SL will require much more maintenance compare to SLK. The ABC alone will cost more than airmatic from your E55. And SL cost much more. They are not the same category at all.

The SLK would be my choice for sure. Drove an R172 SLK55 and an R231 SL63 at ADA and really liked the SLK. The SL is big in size and cost.

she knows AMG from non-AMG, plus the power would be noticeable... she loves driving the E, this could be a close 2nd

Here is some great reading on what to expect from a 230 SL. The ABC issues are related to time, mileage, and heat. The ABC suspensions seem to have more issues in very hot environments and on cars with higher mileage but not exclusively so. It's not a matter of if the system will fail; rather, it's a matter of when the ABC will fail. If you can do the work yourself, it's still expensive but if the dealership does the work it is ludicrously expensive. On a used 230SL, I would budget $3k to $5k per year in maintenance costs. Some years can be much higher than others.
