That's the one part I forgot to warn you about. It took me 3 tanks of gas to realize I was always gassing it, even in parking lots, because I loved the sound. I find it very difficult to drive normally since gutting my mufflers, especially in the 'hot turbo hatch' era we live in. I love pulling up next to 335i's, Gti's or ST's and letting them know that they are in the presence of V8 royalty.

It doesn't look like there should be, but i'm curious to know if there was any sound absorbing material in the first chamber?

So I originally went for removal of the secondary cats, resonator and an x-pipe. Still not loud enough for me. I've been shopping for used c63 mufflers but hard to come by here in Australia.

I asked the exhaust place to try StockC43's mod but they didn't want to mess around with it. I'm thinking of trying another exhaust place to do the same thing. How long should it take to complete a job like that? Has anyone else attempted something similar?

Straight pipe it - Lose the mufflers completely.

I don't think so. It is the family car and I'm just looking for a bit more noise (particularly under WOT), don't want my wife to be embarrassed to drive the car around.

You will be surprised by the noise a straight pipe makes. The S/C makes the E55 a lot quieter than an N/A motor. Loud on start up, quiet around town (partial throttle) and a banshee under WOT.

How does the s/c make the car "a lot quieter"???

Same as a turbo charger. Lowered internal compression to handle the forced induction = less of an N/A motor sound.

Not even close to a turbo charger. The compression has so little to do with the overall sound. the reason a straight piped turbo car is quieter is because there is a turbo sitting in the exhaust stream. A straight piped sc'd car vs a turbo car is SIGNIFICANTLY louder. Its completely non-comparable.

But I'll agree that this is the reason our cars sound like sh*t when straight piped...

My humble apologies - I regretted my reply the minute I posted it. You are 100% correct about the turbo and I should not have compared it to a supercharger, but a straight piped W210 E55 N/A motor sounds a million times better than a straight piped W211 E55.

Overall I'm very happy with this mod. I didnt want something too loud as it is my daily driver. Only downside is that my fuel econmy is down due to me revving it out to 3k from the stop lights because it sounds so good.

I'll try to get some gopro vids up soon.
you ever get them videos? I'm curious how it compares to a c63 muffler on an E55.

I'll see what I can do this weekend. I think it sounds great though. My only complaint is I wish it was louder at wot. I also have some interesting info on e63 mufflers I'll post later when I have a little more time.

I was going to do the same mod on a coworkers 07 E63, so I opened up the end chamber and found this.

So, we got curious and opened up the main chamber and found this.

Completely different design than the E55. Hardly any perforations. By my friends right foot is the muffler inlet and the left foot is the tips. The other pipe just dead ends in the small chamber. I assume to cancel out drone like a helmholtz muffler. We ended up doing nothing with the mufflers and just removing the resonator.

Has anyone ever opened up a c63 muffler to see what is inside?

I've been thinking that for so long, but didn't want to be the one who asked lol. I would think someone would have done that so everyone else could replicate it with the 55 mufflers

I'm starting to second-guess what you pulled out of your muffler...

Thanks for those photos.. So glad I had not had the time to do mine yet. Deff going to try emulate that on mine.

Looks like Cut into the U in the e55 and joint both outlet pipes into it should achieve a similar result. Leave the small chamber alone.

Just did one of my mufflers. A thing to note for the people taking these things to your average exhaust shop. The U (and the rest of the large piping) is stainless in an e55 muffler the two smaller pipes inside are steel so if these exhaust shop guys attack it with their mig with standard steel wire in it you might run into problems down the track with it cracking apart. So you guys might be best finding a shop that knows about 309 ss mig wire or something (good luck with that).

The majority of the rest of it looks to be stainless which is nice as it wont rust out like other mufflers might after doing this.... I still hit it inside on the steel with high temp paint. Put most of the sound deadening crap back in that I could fit as I dont want to hear the thing rattling.

I was actually pretty impressed with the stock muffler build quality its a nice piece for a mass produced part once you see inside a used one you know it would last forever.

I plan on doing what stockc43 did in the first chamber. Then opening up the main chamber, removing all the insulation, and using titanium exhaust wrap to block the baffles and repacking the muffler chamber with the insulation.

Any videos yet?

Heres how I ended up doing mine. A bit more work than most and I went to the effort of re-installing the factory sound deadening.

Id of loved to of done it exactly like the E63 muffler posted above but with the short bits of pipe I had lying around this will be fine for me.

The thing is doing it like this you have to block the end of the U somehow otherwise the gases just loop through the U and make a sucking effect on the outside exhaust tip which is noticeable with condensation on start up.

Once I opened the front compartment and blocked that it was A1 and got what I wanted which was a bit louder not alot and no tinyness going on. But I still want to do headers and remove ALL cats as we dont have to have them in New Zealand so I reckon once thats done its going to sound nice.

Curious if anyone has done the same with the stock resonator? Or does anyone know what else is packed in there around the tubes?

Apparently the main issue with the stock resonators is they are a smaller diameter size than the exhaust tubing used in the rest of e55 exhaust. So if you can get proper 2.75 or 3" compact stainless resonators and replace the stock with that or straight pipes at the same sizes it should be good.

Do you happen to have videos of the sound?
