I have dabbled in this a bit. Banks and Insurance companies in Michigan run carfax's and for me.. banks wouldnt loan me money however credit unions will for salvage titles. Full coverage was offered but if a total loss happened, insurance would only pay out the salvage title value.. which was usually around 25-35% less than clean title.

Depends on the damage. You really want to see what was actually done to the car in order to get the rebuilt title. Otherwise you dont really know how bad it was. I got mine a year ago for $16K with 59K miles salvage title but mine was not from an accident but instead from vandalism. Saw pics of it before it was fixed. Someone scratched up the entire outside of the car, cut up the interior really bad. Was approx 90% fixed properly. At that time I couldnt even find one with that low of miles for anywhere under $20K. So I saved $4K for a less than perfect car. Had it been from an accident I would have been much more worried and would have wanted an even better deal to consider it.

If you plan to keep it, then i suppose having a salvage title wouldn't make a difference if it gets you a good enough deal. But i would look into why it has a salvage title first and how it was fixed. Anything water related i would run away considering the amount of electronics these cars have in them. There are few deals out here for clean title cars. Have any of the cars you're looking at fully inspected. A car that may seem like a good deal and needs $5k in work really isn't a good deal. Good luck.

The internet always freaks out over a salvage/rebuilt title. Sometimes it can be some insignificant things that total it out. The only thing I'd never consider is something with flood damage or major frame damage. I believe that if a car has to be bought back under a lemon law, it is sold as a rebuilt after it is fixed. Someone might be able to clarify that.

Bottom line is that these cars are going to stop depreciating pretty soon and $14k before negotiations on a car with only 32k miles isn't something to just walk away from. Get it up on some jack stands and get underneath with a light.
