I've got this shift knob that we're going to wrap in carbon fiber. I need to get it apart so I can get the wood bit off. So far, no luck and I don't want to break it.
Any thoughts?
These end tabs appear to compress somehow, but its difficult to get them in:
Me attempting to squeeze them in while taking a photo:
Also, these grooves here make me think it might screw off once the tabs are depressed:

The hook pieces (tabs) at the end press inward and you slide the collar off. The wood piece just slides off after that along a groove

Yup, that did it.
Socket over the tabs and a little bit of a twist and it popped right out. Once the collar is off, the wood slides down and off easily.
Now we can get the wood wrapped in carbon fiber.

It twists off as well. It's held onto the boot, so you remove the boot, turn it inside out and twist the housing at the bottom and it comes apart.
The rest of the wood trim is being wrapped in carbon fiber, so the knob has to match.

I prefer CLS shift knob also. The leather on the top wears to easily vs the chrome ring on CLS. Structure of the rest of the knob is the same though.
As I mentioned before when wrapping the wood part you'll need to sand the wood down a fair bit before wrapping or you'll not be able to get the ring back on.
A clarification also on the question you answered. The shift knob and boot come off together. The collar twists to release from the shaft. Do not twist the knob itself. After the collar is open then you can pull straight up to separate knob from shaft
To separate the knob from the boot, you twist off the collar and if I remember right the part that was removed with the socket above.
