NEED UGENT TIRE SIZE HELP!!

First, thanks for checking in.
If I'm running a 295/25/20 and the tire sticks out beyond the edge of the lip by .25 of an inch, can I get away with a 285/30/20? Eyeballing it the 295 almost looks too wide. This is for a set of E55 fit wheels..
How much wider is the 295 vs the 285? I'd rather have the extra meat than the 10mm of wide. I guess my question is, is there a noticeable difference between the 295 and the 285?
