The Dreaded: Rear Main Seal Leak

I had a small rear main seal leak when I bought the car but now it is getting bad. Now I know what goes into the job or what not but wondering what I should do while transmission is out....suggestions.

I am curious if you are going to do it or have it done by a shop and what is the cost ? It probably depends on how many miles on tranny or how abusive it's been treated weather or not to rebuild or not,,,,, these things are supposed to be rock solid so inclined to just change fluid and filter....

I have a small rear main seal leak but I have to do a transmission service anyway so while I'm in there ....I'm replacing the rear main seal and the housing that it is held it in, I'm also putting in the torque converter i purchased from Shardul , and I'll would check the flex discs while I was in there..... If anybody has part numbers for the rear main seal and the housing that it's an unappreciated, all post up the one time use bolts that go on to the flex plate/fly wheel

seal rings

this is the part number for the seal rings: 230 997 03 46. same part number for both sides due to they are the same. this seal ring is the housing and the ring, it is not something separate you have to buy. just order 2 of the above part number and you will be set with the leak in the rear differential. old seal ring wasnt too hard to remove. good luck and scale 1 to 10, more difficult to get the rear axles out, to r&r is say a 3. easy man. take care and good luck.

op

you have the exhaust dropped for the tranny out, you could dress up those exhaust pipes maybe with some vht matt black spray paint, switching out the rear seal go ahead and do the rear differential service, r&r the differential fluid. just a few suggestions....

Is there an upgraded or aftermarket seal that is favored? Mine leaks too, and so did my first 55. I'd rather not put the same thing back in.

repeat seal leak....

i dont know of any upgraded or aftermarket part to replace the rear main seal but i will only make a suggestion for you to consider and i have not tried it myself or have heard anybody trying this so just a thought on the subject and if you are having repeat issues with low mileage leaks, then something to consider: we use gasket sealant around our valve covers, well, some of us do and its a rubber gasket inbetween metal, : so with the rear main seals: right in the "corner" of the round seal, right where that part meets the metal circular rear diferential, place a very thin gasket sealant around that "circle" and when you "press" it into the housing, it should squeeze just in and around that part of the rear main seal that will leak over time. may not be a permenant fix but i would estimate would last a lot longer than nothing at all. again, make it a very thin layer bead. my .02.

that part you mentioned is for the diff axle seals.... we are taling about the rear main seal on the back of the motor toward the TC.... the torque converter bolts part number is A 124 990 22 01.... i think you need three of them! if any one can confirm the rear main seal and retainer (rear main)part# 112 997 0246 and the rear main seal retainer # 112 011 0208

btw power steering res with filter inside part#000 460 0183

My suggestion is that you have a shop do it. Procedure wise, it is a simple. But, to actually do it in a home garage... I am not sure about that. I had my local Indy shop do it, when I was swapping out the TC. Total was 900. But, I will bet it would have been 750 if it was just the rear main seal work. Good luck.

Seeing as how labor is damn near half the cost of getting a torque converter, might as well have one put in and have the RMS replaced during that time.

My rear one was also leaking when i bought the car. I did an oil change an added 300ml of "Lecwec" to the oil - after 2-3 weeks it was completely gone! Thats no joke. That stuff works (i use it in the ABC system, in the gearbox and the steeringbox fluids with superb results).
EDIT: Because of questions via PM, LECWEC can be bought for international customers here: http://chambers-shop.de/en/LecWec/

Last edited by Crissus; 03-29-2014 at 09:35 PM. Reason: Beacause of PMs, added LECWEC source to buy for Intl.

glad to hear this is common, since mine is also leaking.. i have some oil on the bottom on the bell housing but nothing obvious on the ground. my indy shop said 450$ to do the job, sounded reasonable. the question is= to add a torque converter or to not add a torque converter

$250 is really an awesome deal from an MB tech for this kind of job. Does anyone know of any MB tech that does side jobs in the NYC tri-state area?

Anything at , or below $1g is a good deal. Considering you need to drop the trans, $450 sounds sketchy.
