AMG/aftermarket limited slip differential?

Since I have read here that the E55 does not have a limited slip differential, is there one that is available aftermarket? Does AMG even make one? It is absolutely absurd that such a car does not have a limited slip from the factory. I need something else to think about before my beast arrives .

Here is the answer to your question taken from the E55 AMG FAQ over at Rennteam.com:

20. My E55 has serious traction problems, is there any solution?

Yes, AMG offers a 30% limited slip differential for retrofit at AMG in Affalterbach only. This LSD improves traction substantially, especially traction in narrow curves will be improved. The LSD is adapted to the ESP system.
The cost is about 3000 Euros plus around another 800 Euros for installation.

I guess you could always ship your car to AMG, have the work done, and then ship it back.

However, there are rumors that the LSD could be a standard option begininng with the 2005 models.

The wait for mine is killing me too.

If LSD is standard for 2005 then maybe it will be a simple retrofit for 2003-2004 cars. 3800 is pretty steep...even if it is euros. I suppose I will be have to be content with an open diff for now. Maybe MB's thinking is that their traction control system is so great that LSD is not needed.

I'm hearing the same rumors. I was told by a "freelance" (unemployed) German test driver that there was considerable discussion about the lack of LSD on the new 55K cars. Many of his peers agree with MBs choice not to include LSD but not for the same reasons. Some felt ESP was just as effective and others thought it would make power oversteer unmanagable for many unsuspecting drivers. Most also agree that given the choice to stay with relatively narrow tires, any additional power from the new engine slated in 05/06 will be wasted until the car reaches 35-45MPH. LSD could help reduce the need for so much ESP intervention.
