First time at the dragstrip

I got a chance to take my 2004 E55 to the dragstrip tonight and I have a couple questions about how these cars do in the 1/4 mile. The car is 100% stock, on street tires. It was about 70 degrees.

My best run was:

60': 2.10
ET: 13.099
MPH: 108.6

I ran with traction control off, kept it in drive and just mashed on the throttle, feathering it to minimize wheelspin.

The car seemed to shift at around 6500 RPM, but it felt like it let off the power before shifting, like maybe I was hitting a rev-limiter before shifting. Should I manually upshift before 6500? What's the best approach here.

The other thing that seemed strange was how it seemed to hit a wall at about 105 mph. It felt like the top speed was limited or something, because it just stopped gaining speed for the last couple seconds of the track. All other gears pulled hard all the way to the shift. It almost felt like it didn't feel like shifting into 5th gear and just stayed in 4th at around 6k RPM.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks!

first off - kudos to you for hitting the 1/4 mile and posting your first post!

I'd keep traction control on, I'm sure many will chime in here...
what location are you racing? altitude and temps make a difference

welcome!

I'm in Portland, which is just a couple hundred feet above sea level; the temp was 70 degrees, RH 50%.

Is your heat exchanger getting heat-socked and shutting off the S/C?

This place is a joke.
Traction control "on" usually nets better times. You can't out-drive the computer. The throttle will electronically back off between shifts. Your intercooler pump is likely dead. Search here for the info, it's very common. A new Bosch pump is $110 and you can replace it yourself. Congrats on getting to the track! You should be in the 12's closer to 116 MPH.

Thanks for the tips. I'll look into the I/C pump issue.

I leave it in dyno mode since that is how it was tuned but I make it shift on its own

Kind of similar to my first time at the track. Congrats, it's loads of fun going down the track! As posted earlier, weather and altitude is huge with these cars!

First time out I saw 13.1@109 with ~73 degree weather and 90% humidity
Second time out was my PB's
My PB 100% stock w/Bosch 010 pump was---
12.9@113.5, +1450 DA with a 2.1 60'
Temps were 67, 95% humidity(Got to love Texas weather and humidity...)

Dipping in to the 12's with such a terrible 60' foot and average to below average weather I was happy! I was surprised at what a 10 degree difference in weather can do and look forward to getting back out to the track one more time, hopefully in the 50's with low humidity, before I start any mods!

Good luck and have fun with it, don't be discouraged as there is definite room to grow with some more seat time and getting that 60' down!

At 105 you are still in 3rd gear and it should be pulling like a freight train! I would say your intercooler pump is kaput. I remember feeling the same thing when I bought mine saying where the heck did my 500lb ft of torque just go? lol

Now that's more like it!

I put in the new Bosch -10 I/C pump last weekend and got back to the track today. The results were decisive! I busted out a 12.400 on my first run @112.78MPH, with a 60' time of 1.864 (on street tires). Unfortunately that was by far my best run. The rest of the night was consistently in the 12.71 range with 60' times in the 2.1 range. I guess a set of slicks or drag radials is next on the shopping list!

We must have the hit the track at the same time. I did change my pump too a couple of weeks earlier. My time was similar to yours. 12.9 @ 108mph. Then went back to the track last night and run a best of 12.3 @ 114mph. Congrat on your progress.

Congrats! Nice run. Amazing what a difference a faulty i/c pump makes.
