Why is the E55 not getting a 7 speed auto?

Yes.
It's doubtful that the V8K cars will see as much of a benefit from the 7 speed as the NA cars did. It still would be nice to have 2 more gears

Well, it is not as if the E55 AMG is lacking power!
I read in some article this year that the E55 AMG has soo much torque that it can churp the tires when going WOT at idle speed!
I think it may have been a C&D comparison test of the BMW M5, Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG, Audi RS6, and the Jaguar S-Type R. I'm not sure if the Jag competes with that company not only because it has less hp, although it has more torque than the M5, but also because it costs thousands less and isn't as hard-edged as the other cars.

More gears are needed by torque-shy motors. Back "in the day" when I used to build hot-rods some of the fastest 1/4 mile cars we built with 2 spd Powerglide trannys.

Right. That's why CVT works so well on small engines. It would be interesting to see what MB does. Where will the extra cogs go? Lower first? Taller top gear? Tighter spacing in the middle? Combination of all three? My limited time in the E55K and an S55K lead me to think that any lower gearing will be wasted without wider tires and the gear spacing is pretty damn close to optimal (RPM drops aren't too low). Taller top gearing might improve highway mileage but will it be worth MB R and D $$ to develop it?

Just having more gears will make some people buy it. All the salesman has to do is mention that F1 cars have seven gears too. I was suprised to find out MB was using 5-speed autos nearly ten years ago. Don't see any reason why they shouldn't continue pushing forward.
You know the Bugatti 16-4 is gonna have seven gears too.

Will 4-matics get the 7-speed.
Too bad we won't get the FIRST ever MB V-8-powered wagon with RWD even though demand for MBs is healthy is California, Arizona, Texas, and Florida.

Were they specifically talking about a 7 speed behind a V8K motor? We've already seen the specs on the NA V-8 transmissions. Curious to see if the ratios of the two will be the same.
