"Top End" refresh

In my other car life, you do a top end refresh to get the car back to being normal when it has many miles. Before I do too many more miles, I'd like to do the same with the e55. I have already done 1500 worth of parts for the oil and coolant lines, and I think the top of the motor is where I will need to go next.

The list I think that would be low hanging fruit is:

1) Injectors
2) Vac lines (which ones, doesn't seem like TOO many)
3) Intake seals
4) Cam cover gaskets
5) spark plugs
6) Wires
7) **Coils** - kinda pricey to do all
8) ?

Any gotcha's? Any BTDT's? WYIAT's?

I know not many here are off of the stealer tit, but I have noticed some are - some major work is being done in the garage's of the enthusiast community.

Specifically - the injectors - If I am going into change them, I would like to do some larger ones for more headroom on petrol at first (e85 later) and with them being new, I'd kill two birds with one wrench.

Action Item: Do I need a tune for the larger 550 or even larger units?

1. you can get your injectors cleaned for like $15-20 per injector
2. if it aint broke dont fix it
3. intake seals?
4. cam cover gaskets?
5. def do this (night and day difference for me at 105k)
6. def do this (night and day difference for me at 105k)
7. def do this (night and day difference for me at 105k)
8. K&N filter

Also are you looking to mod the car? Or just do a tune up on it?

Going with the whole "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" concept, is it really necessary to replace coils and wires?

Thanks for your response.

New injectors are just sort of required at 85k. Bigger ones would help me lay the groundwork for later mods. Seems like a win win. Unless it gets too complicated with the tune.

Vac lines are 85k and 8 years old. New parts are better than old parts, right?

Air Filter. Hmmm.

Its on the replace list for the 80-105 window on most cars. I guess you could say today's cars (2014) its not, but there are no plug wires and most if not all are COP. Coil on Plug. We have Coil NEAR plug, which means we have 1.5 feet of wire baking above the headers.

Thank you

Fuel pumps are the first line in fuel delivery. I would change them if the wallet allows.

How many miles on the car?

Mine were broken, I was breaking apart towards the higher RPM band, and I had a spare USED set with 32k on them. Don't forget that MBZ used the same coils on the AMG as they did in 1990s! On top of that, any good mechanic knows wires are a must replace on any car. YES WIRES, our cars are not 'coil on plug' style so YES it is unfortunately necessary (at least its not a V12! ). I bought an aftermarket kit for about $180 wire kit, and I think the dealer wants $240+ for them. Maybe with the coil packs you might be able to get away with not replacing, but I felt a HUGE difference once I changed my old plugs, coils, and wires (I also installed K&N filters when I did my initial oil change).

Also I think toadster has a link to aftermarket coils + plugs for like $180!

82k. Yes - that is related of course. I have been putting that off because of wanting a better solution. Some other sender, pump and filter solution was my wish.

fuel pump/sender is way cheaper than an engine - just my 2 cents

-Your coils are fine unless you diagnose one to be underperforming.
-Your injectors are not a "replace at 85k" item, not even close. Chances are the car had premium fuel run it's entire life, but have the injectors flowed and cleaned if you're concerned. If you're planning on extensive mods in the future, the 550cc ones might not be a bad idea.
-Definitely replace the plugs and wires.
-Not a bad idea to replace the valve stem seals.
-The Weistec supercharger is more like $8k +/- plus you can get $2k +/- back from selling your old parts. If you're on a tight budget I strongly suggest you not modify this car too extensively!
-Best of luck with it whatever way you choose to go!

I would change plugs, valve cover gaskets and look into the fuel pump health, then call it a day. If you plan to add HP, then look at changing injectors for higher fuel flow. The rest would be a waste of money that you may need for air bags, fuel pumps or other items that may fail soon.
