New battery mean alternator problem. If you keep driving it around just resign yourself to buying a new alternator. Stop driving it around (if its not too late) and get a new voltage regulator. The moment you can smell something burning, game over time for a new alternator (400-500 refurb) plus labor to install

I had the same problem. Burning plastic smell. I pulled the alternator and took it to an alternator shop. They said it was a bad rectifier. They replaced the rectifier and the bearings, and bench tested - $125 for parts and labor. I reinstalled and it has been running fine for 1,000 miles.
Have a shop look at it before you buy a new or rebuilt alternator.
Side note - be sure to use the same cap that was on the original alternator. The cap must match the cable ends.
