E55 Auxiliary Battery

Yes I did search before typing lol. But I finally got the red light displaying "low battery, convenience features unavailable". I purchased a Energizer Powersport 14 BS battery from Sams Club but it says I have to fill it with the acid and then charge it. Did anyone do this? Also, how reliable is the seals on the battery? Any help would be appreciated!

I can't really help you with that battery, but I have been considering buying this one off ebay which specifically says you don't have to do those things.

Yes, most batteries are shipped dry and come with a plastic container of acid. I had a motorcycle trickle charger and charged the battery overnight. I think that if you fill the battery and let it sit overnight and then install it and drive the car for at least a hour, the battery should charge itself.

Why don't you just buy one that doesn't need shipping and so you get rid of that hassle. I had to replace mine early this year and I bought it from a reseller for Mercedes batteries. It didn't need the acid put in or anything.

Car free at the moment
The convenience features unavailable message means the main battery is low, not the little battery. I suggest getting the main battery tested at an auto store or battery place. That said, the message doesn't necessarily mean there is a problem. I would see it occasionally on both my E55s if the car had sat for a few days undriven and the weather was chilly. Neither car ever needed a new main battery or any kind of repair, so it's just something that happens on these cars.

Any independent shop can get Interstate to come to their shop and leave batteries on the shelf at the shop. They come once a week and the shop pays them for any batteries that were sold. $300 for one is BS and yes, Interstate will provide the six battery to any shop that asks for it.

Understand your system.

Particularly slides 22 and 23.

Like Shadow5501 stated, this is a main battery issue, not the auxiliary battery.

FYI - Toadster's link for the AUX battery leads to a dead sale page @ Amazon

When I turn the car on for the first time everyday the red light wont show, its every other time after that same day it turns on. But okay, so its not the aux battery. Good to know. Can this screw up the alternator if not changed soon?

aux battery

let me ask you some questions and then i will comment: how old is the aux battery? and how old is the main battery? if either one of them is greater than 7 years old, then it may very well be time to change them out. while others had main battery issues, you need to first check the voltage the battery have before starting the car. after allowing the car to sit overnight, check your voltages on both batteries before start up. the voltage should be 12.6 or greater. this will be the best way to "test" which battery is the "bad" battery. a bad battery cannot keep its charge for very long even after its been "recharged" either thru trickle charger or alternator. this should be the very first thing you do. 2) that sams club battery: there is nothing wrong with the acid pouring into battery compartment etc.... hell of lot cheaper than oem and at $300 you are correct: WTF!!! that battery is still considered "sealed" for life eventhough you have to go thru that process of pouring the acid it the battery. Procedure: once you pour the acid into battery, allow to sit approx 1 hour and its recommended to trickle charge the battery between 1 to 1.5 amps/hr overnight and/or up to 6 hours. but as the other member stated: driving for a good while should do it too. so before you take the battery back, check your battery in the morning, both batteries and if any battery is below 12.6 volts on your voltmeter, then that battery may very well need replacing. thats my .02. take care!

Here's a link for that particular battery. There are tons of others on there. Also all the stores have them too. You just can't tell them what you're using it for because they'll claim they don't have the right battery. These batteries are used mostly in power sports applications. I actually ended up just grabbing a Magna Power from Sam's Club. You just need a 12v 12 ah battery with at least 170 cca. The Sam's battery had 200 cca.

The car still has the original batteries. I think i will just change both. Should i unhook the terminals first of the main to see if anything changes? Will i have to reset anythig if i do? Thanks

battery change....

it doesn't matter which battery you do first. you can start with the trunk battery first. always remove the negative terminal first (ALWAYS). then remove the positive terminal. when you replace, place the positive terminal on first and the negative on last. when you go to place the negative terminal on the post, you may get a small "spark" or very minor "noise" as you place it on the post. nothing to be worried about. do the same for the front battery. same process. once you have it all button up and replaced, the windows and the steering wheel, sunroof will need to be reset. crank the car up and just roll the windows all way down and hold for 2 seconds and then back up and hold for 2 seconds and do this for all windows and also for the sunroof also (open/hold for 2 secs and close and hold for 2 secs). then lastly, turn your steering wheel from full left/hold and full right/hold... then you are done.

Ok so I ended up taking my car to the stealership on Friday, I simply did not have the patience or the time the past 2 weeks. Anyways, the tech first told me that E55s do not have auxilary batteries, he then confirmed that there are auxiliary batteries in the E55

They ran a diagnostic and some codes came up unrelated to the aux battery. The aux battery was replaced in 2013 and main battery tested out fine. They still cannot find out the exact issue and won't know until tomorrow( weekend they are closed)... Any other reasons why I have the " low convenience options" light if both the batteries are fine??

thank you!

tough 1

thats a tough call on that scenario?? the voltage regulator could be at fault but that should have been found out from the dealership test. i dont know if the dealership replaces voltage regulator, i think they rather replace the whole alternator???? i am not sure but you will find out soon. i thought you originally said the aux battery was maybe original??? if both batteries were "new" or only 1 year old, then it would means that something else is at fault: the voltage regulator/alternator, there is a relay for the aux battery up front and then there is the battery control module (BCM) in the rear that could be the problem also. the tests the dealership will run will try and isolate each of these components to see exactly which one is at fault. man sorry i cannot give a more definitive answer.... the electronics on these cars are the worst/difficult to figure out...

Well the verdict was the battery voltage regulator. Had warranty cover it except for a 100 deductible. Not bad? Thanks yall
