Short block mock ups to see where I was with clearances on the new bearings, etc.
Assembling the ceramic coated pistons and new ARP rod bolts.

Looks like I was seeing what the stock ring gap was here, and then taking a bit more clearance in the top rings. Notice the block has been decked.

measure and remeasure. Checking stretch on new ARP bolts on final short block assembly. Had to modify the tool a bit to use it on this small rod.

Moving along on the assembly more recently. Don't have pics from front and rear covers are on, middle-pan is sitting ready to clean again and install with sealant.

OCD kicked in. Why have a windshield washer heater as a failure point in SoCal. Deleted from tank and properly sealed off.

If you take your time and do it right, you can really see a difference. And it feels better making the car new again. I don't like old grime on "newly" reconditioned cars.

lol, well if you really want to know. BBC for 2007 Sub 2500, Z06 DD that will get 2650 and e85, and an 89GT (928) will get reconditioned and sold. And all the rest.
But my wife asks me daily "When will you finish my car?" and hers is this e55. Front suspension, rear tank, and transmission refresh after this long block. Oh, and a head unit that is more modern.

Gotta get the heads done for the machinist. Already smoothed the bowls on one head (driver) and now will get on the passenger side.

I have some more pics coming on the progress. Ported the SC a bit. Smoothed the ports and bowls on the heads. Got them resurfaced.
Anyone using these cams? https://www.raceiqperformance.us/pro...eiq-m113-cams/
He seems to have a grind that he gets welded onto it. Don't see how its a base circle cut.
Does anyone know the maximum lift with the existing pistons?

Does he not tell you the specs on the cams?
Max lift shouldnt have any effect on PTV clearance in this application with as short as the duration is .
The pistons are down in the bore when the valve is at peak lift.
(still, always check with clay!)

That seems so strange to me.
I suppose with a mostly stock engine you can just throw some mystery cams like that on and it’ll probably run, but if you’re building something more custom and elaborate, you need to know the specifics on all the parts you’ve got so you can first crunch the numbers to make sure they’re going to work.

I will probably go down and cam doctor the existing stock ones and see where I *should* like to go with lift and duration.
its so limited. It’s not like there is even anyone left or have a conversation with (present company excepted) about what is required and what has worked.

A while back I doctored the stock 55k cams, plus a set of VRE/PTE and Crower custom regrinds that I never got around to using. I might still have the data in my desk drawer. I’ll look this weekend.

Heads are picked up and clean for assembly. However, it may be that I need to double check some of the keeper installations. These closeups show that the exhaust valves were tipped a bit. I will be replacing the hydraulic lifters for all valves on the rockers for good measure.
Looks clean and pretty.

Seat pressure is still higher than anticipated. The valve train is a roller assembly, so not as affected on pressure as flat tappet (Porsche does this and still does).
I could disassemble and shave the spring cups and the bottoms of the springs to buy maybe a millimeter or 2 to step out the springs.

What are are you getting for seat pressure?
And how are you measuring?

I tested these Springs alone with my own tools and pressure tool. At installed height it was more then 90 but not as high as that. Can’t quite remember.

120 lbs of seat pressure, at what installed height?
What year is your car?
I thought all the 55k heads were the same but I could be mistaken. I know the NA heads have longer valves and taller springs so if you’re running those heads you’ve got to shim the seats to run the beehives (or OEM 55k Springs)
it looks like you’re just refreshing the heads that came on your car.

They mentioned they have the installed heights listed for all engines but I also gave them the 1.47 that I have seen mentioned. I suppose I could look in the WSM to find out if Mercedes mentions it.

There’d be no reason to shim them any further if you’ve already got 120 pounds on the seat.
I wonder if the machine shop might have measured at the wrong installed height?
If you’d like, you can send me a few springs and I’ll check them for you. I’ve got some OEM springs as well as some other brand new beehives that I can do an A-B comparison with.

2006. Original e55 heads. If I shim the seats it will be even higher obviously, and these are the K heads. As you mentioned, stock double springs land around 70s closed. These are now 120 closed at the original installed height. I think it’s like 1.47 or something like that.
