SBC Threshold Reached?

Started up the car today and got the "Visit Workshop, Service Brakes" message on the dash, though not the one with the red death font. Brakes are in great shape with no depreciable reduction in performance and the pad sensors are not worn. I am not getting ESP lights on the dash that typically come with a stop lamp switch failure. I had to SBC accumulator replaced two years ago, but no issues since. When the SBC service threshold is reached, does it give this indication on the dash, or does pop up with the immediate service (red) text on the dash?

Possible brake pedal switch issue. Are your brake lights stuck on or don't come on at all?

*edit .. missed the "service" part. My brake pedal switch had an issue but can't remember if it said service or not in the message. It definitely said "Visit Workshop"

Brakes lights are not on. I'll stop by the dealer to have them look at resetting the counter for SBC. Hopefully they don't try to charge an arm and a leg. Anyone had this done at Penske West Covina?

Doesn't seem right that they could put on a expiration on a subsystem of the car that requires replacement of the hardware even when operating properly. Anyone here been successful in getting the counter reset?

E55 and several 928s
Well, its under warranty for 10 years, (don't know miles).

If they are honest and its SBC, it shouldn't be an issue.

I'd be in interested in the actual number on the counter. If you can find someone with xentry, you can reset the counter yourself.

From my internet perusings, this should be it. I found it with strong language to not do it (for obvious reasons), so do not try this.

Start engine.
Start xentry, go to:
Control units
Chassis
SBC sensotronic brake control
development data
Actuations
Complete index of Actuations
Bremsenzahler aktualisieren und Lebensdauerzahler F neu berechenen
set ulNBR to 0, click F3
Bremsenzahler auf beliebigen Wert setzen
set ulNBR to 0, click F3
Lebensdauerzahler F neu berechenen
set ulNBR to 0, click F3
Lebensdauerzahler F neu berechenen und schreiben
set ulNBR to 0, click F3
log out of xentry
Do not turn off car.
drive for at least 10 minutes. (or let idle)

You can do it this way, but at your own risk.

I had the message and my dealer cleared it at no charge. They told me it was a software update.

The 10 year warranty is gone now for the 2003, 2004, and some 2005 models unfortunately.

sometimes its just a simple programming but could be stop lamp switch, pressure reservoir, or the hydraulic unit complete.

if its still within 10 years only the programming or the hydraulic unit replacement are covered.

I took it to my Indy last night who tried to connect to SBC via DAS and his computer was not able to do so. The white error notification on the instrument cluster went away for the evening but popped back up this morning. Found a few dealers who said they were willing to reset it so off to get it looked at tomorrow. If anyone here has Xentry or Star access and is able to help reset it and is the local LA area it would be greatly appreciated, though curious why my Indy was not able to get into SBC. He was well aware of the reset procedure.

you really want to gamble your safety with reseting the SBC?

You do present a valid point. In retrospect it probably isn't the safest idea to gamble with. I'm just frustrated that MB engineered this time bomb of a problem in these cars and I'm one of the unfortunate few that didn't have the pump fail within the 10 year window. Seems MB was wise on this one to ensure that most Indy shops are unable to fix and ensure the revenue stream continues to their benefit, but what else is new. I have had the fuel smell coming from my car pretty bad lately and for some time, so they're going to be taking a look at that given the recent NHTSA ruling. Smells like a 60's muscle car.

Bosch now offers exchange EHB units. I think about $500-$600 with discount.

Absolutely, no need to introduce older contaminated fluid into the system after such an expensive fix.

The dealer (Fletcher Jones of Ontario) wants $2122 to replace the SBC pump. The brake fluid bleed/replacement is an additional $205. Knowing roughly what the range of costs for the part are online, it seems to me their price is on the high side. Curious what range of prices others here have had to pay for this repair?

My independent mechanic charged me $1500.
