My E55 uses oil yet no leaks and no smoke !

My E55 MY06 model,
I have had it about 5,000 miles and the Add oil light has come on the dash 3 times now.

When it first came on I added a litre as it requested , and was fine, then a month later, it came on again, add another litre, and now come on again !

I don't see any leaks.

It doesn't appear to blow any smoke, maybe a bit black when you stand on it, but I presumed it was rich ( not standard )

What grade of oil do you suggest ? we do not get cold here. ( never below freezing )

They consume oil. It's nature of the beast. All of these high horsepower cars do.

That's still a bit odd. I never have to add oil between oil changes, drove 5000 miles since last oil change and everything is fine. Some engines do consume oil but seems a bit excessive for you. Did you check your valve covers? maybe its dripping on your headers and it burns off without you noticing.

i got this message back in October and was due for an oil change soon, so I put in fresh 8 qts, new filter and drain bolts.

800 miles later got the message again to add 1 qt oil. wouldn't exactly 800 mile interval is normal, but I do drive my car the way a 500 hp car should be driven. & the message popped up after a long night of spirited driving in mostly triple digits, some periods well into triple digits..this seems to be the trigger whenever i get the message.

also, i do have a very minor oil leak but can only see the oil when i remove the shield on the bottom to get to the pan because the shield catches anything that would drip to the floor. so you could have a small leak contributing that you wouldn't be aware of unless you took off the shield on the bottom. 2 things to consider

oh, i use mobil advanced euro formula 0w40 ..i know the dealer switched to using 5w40 for no apparent reason but i stuck with 0w40. im in ny though, cold weather comes into play, it was 6 degrees here last night. fun stuff lol

After 800 miles, that's not too good, you must have a lot of blow by, what's your mileage?

surprisingly mb considers up to 1.35 quarts of oil consumption per 1000 miles for the AMG 112, 113, 156, and 275 engines.

You do not want to solely rely on the oil level sensor to gauge your oil level. Invest in a dip stick tool and verify that your car in fact needs additional oil. 168mm is the mark you want to be at when verifying your oil level.

Swag,

The recommended capacity for an oil change is approximately 9.0 quarts. Your oil level warning is not surprising if you only used 8 quarts.

All motors have blow by ,some more than others, but you may have a leak, every 800 miles to add oil is a lot

i think i put in 8.5 qts to be exact. I had 10 qts total and have the leftover in the jug, guess I can measure it when I get home to see exactly how much went in ..yea I should probably invest in a dipstick. & my own SDS.. argh how am i supposed to keep modding when all my mod money goes to repairs, maintenance, & tools

i mentioned in my post i do have a small leak apparent on the bottom of the oil pan, figured it was the rear main seal ..i'm sure it would be a lot more than 800 miles before the message if I drove my car normally

my car runs very strong though, wouldn't i be down on power if I had a lot of blow by ?

Using the cluster is a very inaccurate way of determining oil consumption. The most accurate is to perform an oil change and get the level set right using a dip stick preferably. Then drain all that oil and weigh it. Put the oil back in and drive the car say 500 miles. Then weigh it again and calculate the exact amount consumed.
A small rear main leak will take forever to leak an entire quart.
Without using the weight procedure if you have a dipstick then set the level perfect at operating temp then drive 500 miles and use the dipstick again and measure how much oil it takes to get back up to the original level.

How would you know if you are down in power? Do you have time comparisons?

Thanks for that.
So if I read this correctly, as I don't have an engine oil dipstick, I can push my oil dipstick in till it bottoms, wait 3 seconds then pull it and should be 168mm from the bottom of the stick ??

Is that correct ?

Bingo, E55 takes 9 quarter of oil. Why are you only putting 8?

I would imagine the oil light comes on. You don't need a dipstick the sensor when working properly are very accurate.
