Can an alternator be tested without the voltage regulator?

Can an alternator be tested without the voltage regulator?
Having a problem with the alternator or the VR, but not sure which. Can the alternator be tested without the VR to determine which one is the problem? Thanks for the help guys.

What is your issue, mileage of the car, battery ages(both)
An alternator can be tested without the VR but one must have knowledge of the workings, an mostly it will be resistance or continuity, brushes do wear so although they look okay the length is important in a VR.
