Engine Died midst Driving...Need some feedback

Folks, yesterday While driving along, the car suddenly died; all the lights on the dash came on and steering became almost impossible to turn. Total power loss. When I tried, the car cranked severally but never started until i left it alone for a while. It did the same things again today...Started fine after being parked for hours. I have replaced both fuel pump and sender under the rear seat (last year) and at a loss what gives? I read about the crank position sensor (CPS) and fuel pump but since I recently changed the latter, I need some help figuring this out.

Have you opened the hood? Are the belts still there? Are the pullies intact? Any other details on the car?

Yes sir, I looked and all appears normal. When it fired back up, i drove it like a bat out of hell (normal AMG diving to the rest of you) the 2 miles home and it made it. Very confusing for all the folks that saw me sitting there with hazard on one minute, then flying past them all the next.

CPS. Driving fine one minute, sitting on side of road for 15 minutes, then engine started and I drove home with no issues. FWIW, no error codes from the ECU (WTF Mercedes engineers?!).

I now carry a spare CPS and tools to replace it in my trunk. Very disconcerting to be on the side of the road a long ways from home....

Confirm against VIN number. Somewhere along the way they changed the shape of the connector but I may be mixing that up with my W210.

1/4"drive E8 torx socket, 18" extension, and rachet (plus tape to hold the bolt in the socket).

Here's a good link posted by some guy named Shardul:

Like I said, I literally carry a spare CPS and the tools above in my trunk. I also carry a spare bolt just in case I should drop the original in the weeds on the side of the road if it happens in the future. You can get the bolt at the dealer or from ECS tuning.

attempted to install

I had a rough time with the install today; attacked the removal after work and it seemed it was impossible to unplug the harness but after a long while, it came off. I had never changed it previously. Then the E8 dropped into the abyss and without another, I am forced to stop as all stores were closed. I guess my hands are big as it was so hard reaching the cps. I shall try again tomorrow. Many thanks to all the amazing lads and lassies on this forum!

Your socket is probably on the undertray. Just take it off and it will roll out on to the floor. it could come out while your driving and nick your paint. That happened to me with a spark plug i left on the undertray.

Finally got this replaced today with the help of a good BMW-driving friend with small hands...Many thanks again to all for the suggestions; I am going to permanently deploy an older laptop to the garage just for this forum and DIY projects! Simply outstanding.
