Good Bye,E55.

Saturday morning,my beloved E55 goes to my dealer.
With Renntech mods it had 400hp and 480lb torque at the wheels.
For next 10 days it will be a loaner ML350,then '04 S600 with all options except Distronic.
I was jealous of the Treynor's car and decided to go for it.S600 has much higher potential for tuning and I like big, heavy cars.
Will get stage 3 from Renntech and their new Exhaust system with 4 pipes as soon as it is broken in.

In hindsight, I wasn't all that impressed with the E55. I guess I'm not the only one?

I thought my 540i handled better than my E55 with less bottoming out.

Sorry to hear that, Absent. There is no doubt you can get more power out of that 600 engine. And you get a better suspension. BTW are paying MSRP for the S?

LOL 700 ft-lb is crazy, especially if the S600 weighs "only" 4,200 lbs.

I agree with the fact that the S600 has a greater potential for hp and torque increases with a simple ECU mod to increase boost. The E55 was at the upper end of the affordability range for me and I respect the fact that you can trade up to a car that costs at least $40K more. Gotta love a sedan that weighs more than two tons and can achieve a mid 11 1/4 mile time with drag radials and the Renntech ECU mods. Does the S600 have a limited slip differential unlike the E55?

If you weren't that impressed with the E55, then you must just love your E320.

LOL I knew that was coming. I hardly use it...I'm not the one who uses the 320. I use the 540i daily.

The 320 cannot be compared to the 55, c'mon. I meant that for $80k and proclaimed family rocket, it wasn't all that. That's probably why I wasn't affected at all when I traded it for a 320 for my fiancee.

I didn't mean to stir things up. BTW, is your Project CLK done yet? How long has it been? 2 years? 3 years?

Not stirring anything up. I just found it funny. I can understand why you weren't impressed with the E55's handling, but the 540 must feel like a turtle compared to the E55. Perhaps the power scared you a bit?

As for my CLK... 18 months. It will be done when its done. Outsourcing custom parts takes forever. Getting custom rods from Carillo takes 4 - 6 months alone. I just have fun watching the process and look forward to getting it back by the time winter is over.

How long should I put the time back? With the traction you are going to get Sleestack, I think Cali will be next to Alaska in no time!

You know, you floor the car, it gets so much grip that all of Cali just detaches from the rest of normal America!

Big mistake, Absent, getting a car like this at the tail end of it's model run. The new S class will truly be awesome. Can't you wait a little longer? Your modded E55 is hardly something to feel inadequate in during the wait.

Yes,it's loaded,incl. AMG pkge,on the water now,be here in 10 days.
S will be continued through '05 and I don't expect to keep it longer then a year anyway.
Will replace it with either new S or RS8? or M5 if it is any good.

I'll be the first to admit, the power is more than adequate on the E55 for daily use. Since I don't go to the track often, I didn't find the power useful, especially if I drive in LA traffic 150-200 miles a day.

Yep, the 540 is a turtle compared to the E55.

I guess at this point there is no where else to go but up. I've been looking for a new toy, but every single one of the cars I'm looking at is a big dissapointment compared to the E55!

S2000, Evo, STi, Mini, 350Z, I've tested them all and can't compare to the beast. My Porsche salesman offered a 911GT3 but no test drive and allocation will be closer to May, which will be a few months from the 997 so I'm passing up on it.

BTW, these weren't meant to replace the beast but to quash my sports car itch.

I assume those cars were a disappointment because of their lack of power and use of cheaper materials. They should all handle much better than your E55. If you want power and handling in an affordable car, why don't you test drive a Z06?

Norb, you know I've been looking for a sports-car also since the E55 wasn't "it."

I looked at most of the cars you looked at: S2000, Mini, 911C4S, and 350Z but not the Evo nor STi.

Sleestack makes a good point with the Z06...it's relatively inexpensive, light, and powerful.

absent,

congrats on the "upgrade". You'll definitely have to take that thing to the drag strip with our group when the warm weather hits. It'll be quite a site seeing that thing hit high 11s. I'll make sure we keep in touch as we get closer to spring.
