E55 Tuning Questions?

I HAVE A 2004 E55:

IS K&N AIR FILTERS THE BEST PERFORMANCE AND HP GAIN?
OR ARE THERE BETTER ONES. ITG AIR FILTERS?

I ORDERD THE S-CLASS AIR INTAKE FOR MY CAR. DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO INSTALL IT. OR IF I SHOULD GET MY MERCEDES DEALER TO DO IT?

IM THINKING OF GETTING AN Eisenmann RACING EXAUST I HEAR ITS THE BEST OUT THERE.. WHATS YOUR OPINION ON THIS EXAUST? DO YOU KNOW OF ANY BETTER (VERY EXPENSIVE) DOES IT GAIN HP AND KILL TOUQUE

ALSO DOES ANYONE KNOW OF ANY GOOD PLACES TO INSTALL THIS EXAUST IN THE NYC-NJ AREA?

ALSO IM STUCK ON WHERE TO GET MY ECU AND PULLEY DONE AND FROM WHO TO GET IT.

I HERD RENN-TECH WAS THE BEST AND WITH PROVEN RESULTS. PLUS ALL IS WARRENTIED BUT ITS ALSO $5,000 BUT ID RATHER SPEND THE MONEY FOR THE QUALITY.

PLEASE HELP IN ANY WAY YOU GUYS CAN. THANKS A LOT

You could do the K&N, but the improvments are minimal and I would just stay with the stock filter. I've heard of too many horror stories with owners over oiling their filters damaging the MAF sensor(s).

The s-class intake is a very easy mod. But if you don't know how...ask a dealer tech and it shouldn't take them more than 5 minutes.

EVO Sport should have a pully-ECU kit out shortly. Haven't seen the power gains, but should be around the same ball park as renntech. As you said, Renntech is backed up with warranty and is probably some of the best quality parts available anywhere.

I had explored using Renntech upgrades on my C32 and I can tell you from correspondence I had with them that they will hook you up with a shop somewhere near your vicinity to do the install.

There is no mas flow air sensor in the W211 E55 for oil to pollute. The car runs a manifold air pressure sensor, because of the SC. This is an "Internet fallacy", that is a problem for MB naturally aspirated V8's only. The K&N, or even better BMC filters are fine.
Install the airtube yourself it is a 5-10 minute job. Just pull the old one off and push the new one on.
Powerchip now have a ECU upgrade specifically engineered for airtube and pulley upgrade and should be able to organise a pulley kit for you as well. save around $2000 and get more performance.

Thanks for the info Stephens...I stand corrected on the MAF and air filters. I've had problems with the K&N filters in my 996 TT. I switched to BMC and have been happy since.

Here is their website: http://www.powerchipgroup.com/index.asp
And their US phone number is: 1-800-495-0777

For the performance upgrades, especially something like the Eisenmann exhaust, can anyone tell me how this affects driveability. I always heard about back pressure and how a certain amount is needed for smooth performance. I would like more power and an even badder sound, but not at the expense of the smooth machine the E55 is.

There are some excellent books around regarding exhaust system design. From my limited understanding no backpressure is good for power and or torque. There seems to be confusion between gas velocity and backpressure.
Additionally a motor may need to be re-tuned to fully take advantage of lower exhaust backpressures.
More knowledgable opinions may be able to shed some more light on this.

Eisenmann = loss of power + excessive noise.

Since you're considering RENNTech's ECU + Pulley, then go with the RENNTech exhaust.

Call Mercedes Benz of San Diego (619-279-4550) and talk to Duane in parts. They endorse and can recommend a RENNTech installer in your area.

Thanks, Stephens. And the way people are quickly doing mods, people here will soon have the anwers to these questions. I'm assuming already that the Renntech upgrade is problem free.

I had a Harley with open pipes and a 911 that sent chills up my spine when I cranked it up. Loud exhausts make me smile. Well, for this classy car maybe just a little louder. But may I ask what you base your loss of power statement on.
