Again less than 200 cars had the problem. BMW have sold over 20,000 E46 M3 already
1) Owners that paid to fix their cars got their money back
2) BMW M3 hold excellent resale value
3) The problem is solved
4) M3 owners are very happy and enjoy their cars
5) Case close

BMW's cover up? There is no cover up because they fixed everything and issued a 6 years or 100K miles warranty.
The refunded money to every owner that paid for it. They did a recall. EveryOne is happy
What else you want?

I had my M3 during the whole ordeal, so I lived what happened.
BMW tried to deny everything at first, blaming the drivers, then the oil. It was only AFTER Jason's website that finally BMW relented and admitted they were at fault. If it wasn't for the internet BMW would still be blaming drivers. This wasn't a dealer cover up either, it was from corporate headquarters.
THAT IS THE COVER UP I'M TALKING ABOUT. I've lost trust in BMW because of it.
Is that clear enough for you?

Norb is correct....BMW 'fessed up and fixed problems *only* AFTER Jason's website was
up, and that took them some time. There were over 100 documented engine failures on that website before BMW issued their recall. They*did* drag their feet, and they also *did* blame the owners at first. Go to roadfly.com and read the whole sad saga for yourself.

I think BMW makes some great performance cars but when you start making a motor that is as high revving the M3/M5 and new E60 M you are bound to get some problems with engine failures. The force on the motor increases exponentially with higher RPM's. There was a very lengthly thread on the M3 board about it, quite interesting.

I've had and like them both, but the bottom line is that MB has always been more reliable, I don't think I'll ever own a bimmer again.

It's a shame that happened. The widespread publicity was a hit to BMW's and more specifically the M3's reputation and the M3 is an absolutely fantastic automobile. Theine, beautiful car. After having a white C32 we were ready for a different color, but I know we would have loved the beast in white.
