Hey guys, getting a message on the dash that says check engine oil level at next refueling. I have about 1/4 - 1/3 quart bottle of oil in my trunk. If I was just to remove the oil cap, poor the 1/4 quart in there, and drive off, is that ok? I don't need to change the oil filter right? I drive the car pretty hard and it's at 68k mileage. I'm at about 4k miles since last oil change. I change my oil every 5k miles.

when i got this message for the first time, and a month later again. Ended up being the rear main seal that was leaking more than i thought it was leaking.

I wouldn't think a 1/4 of a quart would be enough. I think the check oil/fill up at next stop is when you are a quart down.
As you have a W211 63, this should still work - set your dash to outside temp, key off, key to first position, quickly triple tap the odo rest button, dash will beep and then display volts, use the up and down to display your oil. May need to go to second position for it to show. That will give you a more accurate oil level readout.
Oil leaks - rocker cover gaskets, sump, rear main seal. Look under the hood, and under the car. Should be pretty obvious if you're loosing enough oil to ask for a top up in 4K miles.

You can just open cap and add oil. Add what it says to put in. It should tell you.
You can also check oil level status from your gauges from the mph, menu right button will check oil level. One of those buttons. Im not at my car right now.

I tought you coudnt check the oil level thru the cluster? just with the dipstick... on a e63...

this isnt that hard. you have a dipstick. check the oil level manually and adjust accordingly. if you dont have leaks then the engine is burning a little (normal) or it wasnt set to the max when the last oil change was done.

All German cars use oil. There was a time when if you brought in a Porsche and it was using a quart every 1000, the stealer would tell you there is no issue unless its a quart every 500.

I check mine often. If you are low it will often tell you exactly how much you are low. You don't need dipstick. The sensor is very accurate.
You can take it a step further and check by pressing the reset button 3 times quickly and scroll through the menu and it will show how much oil you have in the pan.

Yes you can check with E63 and E55. Right through the cluster.

don't just randomly dump oil in and hope you are right. having too much oil in a car is almost as bad as not having enough. get a dipstick if you can't figure out how to check through the cluster.

Checked with dipstick. It's below the lowest tick. I put in 1/4 quart and so far no complaint. The oil level still isn't at the right level. I only had 1/4 in the trunk lol.

Ignorant question but where or what would be constituted as the reset button in an '05? I know that apparently the '03-'04 models had an actual "reset" button near the climate controls but mine does not.

Update: Went to stealership and bought a quart of oil. Unfortunately, they do not do a "complimentary" top-off. They made me purchase a quart of oil for $9.61. I paid, then one of the staff came and topped it off. He showed me that my oil was at the lowest tick. He put in a half a quart and it went to the middle. So far so good no messages.

Its the trip mileage reset button they're referring to. Turn the key to the position before start and press that button 3 times. It will give you battery voltage first. Press the steering wheel arrows and you will get additional screens, one that shows how much oil you have.

I had same message. I have 06 E350. After reading this thread I'm worried I may have a leak somewhere. I checked the dipstick this morning and level was low. This message also came up right before my last oil change so I'm wondering if a pattern emerging. Anyway, I don't remember the Consistency of the oil that was used last time so is it better to change the oil now or is it possible to still add? I'm at about 3000 miles since last oil change. 72000 miles on the car.

This happened to me 3 weeks ago. I was cruising with some friends got a message saying that I was low by 2 quarts, stopped at an autozone, checked for leaks. Sure enough it was the Rear main seal went into autozone bought 4 quarts just in case
put 2 of them in. Not a problem since I haven't even seen any oil on my garage floor after that.
