Getting trim plate around shifter back in???

2006 E55 is new to me. My CD changer does not work. It has no power. There is a Passport SRX installed on this car, and maybe they took the power from the CD changer for that, but I decided to check to see if a power cable was just unplugged.

Following good instructions from the Youtubes on taking my dash apart to check the power cables, I took out the trim plate around the shifter, the ashtray, etc. When I put it back together, the trim plate around the shifter is not seating properly. It almost looks perfect, but it's not going down as far as it should, and it blocks the ashtray from opening just a little bit. It's not seated as far back as it should be, either, because there is a tiny gap at the back. The ashtray is properly seated, so that's not the problem.

Is there some trick to putting this piece back in that I'm missing? The car is still driveable and looks close to correct, but I can tell it's just not right.

Did you slide the center console forward into the "holes". I made this mistake and it took me a few times. You have to slide the center console "hooks" into the "holes". I didn't see them until I took everything back apart and looked at it carefully

I see those two black tabs or "hooks" at the front by the ashtray, and there are two metal tabs on the back of the plate that slide backward into two holes on the console. There is also a post on the front of the shift plate that looks like it's supposed to go down into a square hole by the two black "hooks", but I don't think I'm getting them lined up right. You have to put the metal tabs into the back holes first, but it's stumping me to get everything back together exactly right. Thanks for the suggestion and I'll go try again.

Okay, the solution, finally, was to remove the leather boot around the gear shift. That was as simple as squeezing the base of the boot on the sides and lifting up and turning it out of the way. That gave visible access to the black hooks at the front, then I used fingers and screwdrivers to push the black hooks forward so the plate could drop down properly. It was a huge relief when I got it back together.
