Wheel repair guy said my chrome rim was 'soft?'.. Dangerous to use?
I bought my E55 with factory alloy rims that have been chromed. One of the rims developed a crack and I took it to get repaired earlier this week. When I came to pick it up, the dude who repaired it said the wheel was 'soft.' He also mentioned it had been re-chromed.
I'm not sure what he was implying.. Is my wheel unsafe to use? If so, in what way? What are the dangers? They seem to work fine, although I haven't gone above 130mph in about a year.
I would not be going 130 on cracked, welded, chrome wheels. They "seem" to work fine until you have a blow out at 130 and smash in to a wall.
Btw mb has technicial bulletins as to why to not chrome alloy wheels. It lists all of the ways the chrome causes damage to the wheels. That is why mb has never offered a chrome plated alloy wheel. All chrome wheels were done by the aftermarket.
