Has anyone changed there rear axel ratio

From the MB specs:

Rear axle ratio 3.46:1 (E300 Diesel)
Rear axle ratio 3.07:1 (E320)
Rear axle ratio 2.82:1 (E430)
Rear axle ratio 2.82:1 (E55)

Has anyone swapped there E55 rear for the E300 to get off the line quicker? I know that Bergwerks offers a ratio change but has anyone done it and seen an advantage?

The best way to launch the E55 is with ESP on, for the SL55 which has shorter ratio, take off ESP.

If you shorten the E55 ratio,s you're possibly sending 900Nm to the same size wheels, and well if an E55 can break traction at 80mph in 3rd gear with ESP on, then you do the math

with over 500 ftlbs of torque available, the rear diff ratio is not the limiting factor. Tires/contact patch would be of more value.

The W211 E55 has a 2.65:1 differential. Upping the differential ratio will increase the torque to the drive wheels making wheelspin and contact with the rev limiter in first gear more likely!

I agree with Eclou.

First things first, get more rubber on the ground to get more traction. Change your 265's for 285's. You will have problems finding something easily by staying in 18". You will likely have an easier time going 19".

It's unlikely the 3.06 ratio instead of 2.65 alone will make a difference under 60mph, more rubber will improve your chances. Once you are up over 60mph, and you foot is down however, it is likely that the ratio will then make a difference and get you to the 1/4 mile faster.

Kleemann conservatively says, (I'm not quoting them) that one could expect about 0.4 to 0.5 sec better time on the 1/4 mile. I suspect the driver will make a huge difference in acheiving the better time. It's also my understanding that this new differencial also includes a multi disk 60% limited slip which could improve on the 0-60mph, especially if you change your rubbers from 265 to 285. Going wider than 285 will force you to modify the body so you probably wouldn't want to do that, (I sure won't) but 285 is quite respectable for this car.

Has anyone tried wider tires than 265?
