I agree with ex-beemer. Speed is something that can be enjoyed constantly in a variety of circumstances. Basically we have an attractive, luxurious rocket sled that also happens to corner quite nicely, especially with superior tires.

Well, there isn't much out there for us yet in the way of handling mods, so yes, 19 inchers is a good way to go. Superior in the sense that you get what you pay for. Tires vary greatly in their ability to do certain things, such as perform well on wet surfaces. And they are rated along the lines of performance, high performance and ultra high performance. A softer type compound is going to be "stickier", but may also cost a lot more and wear significantly faster. For someone who always wants the best traction and can handle the expense, that's the way to go. Some here have highly recommend the BF Goodrich G-force tires. But if you go to the Tirerack website and follow through on displaying what standard size tires fit the E-55 you'll be able to read the consumer reviews of various brands and it's really quite informative.

Regarding tires, My car has 7500 miles on it and I've now experienced 3 tires. The Contis are weak handlers, Nitto 555 are moderately better, the Yokohama AVS Sports (19") are very noisy and traction is definitely an issue. I think my next set will be Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's.
Lowering the car 1 1/2 " and adding 19" wheels improves the handling, but the car feels every bump or groove in the road. The stock wheels are so nice, I don't think it's worthwhile spending upwards of $6000 to do a wheel upgrade. I happened upon my HRE's used at a price I couldn't refuse.
