Was a transmission change made from 04 to 05?

Lots of good information here. I found a few threads talking about differences in years but what I found was mostly cosmetic and interior features.

However, when I see cars advertised for sale, if theyre the later 05-06, I see included in the add "beefier, preferred or stronger" transmission.

Truth to this?

2003 E55s had a different valve body (part number) that did NOT have the popular "blue top" solenoids. It was used in conjunction with a different TCU that did NOT allow shifting (using steering wheel mounted buttons) in modes other than "manual".

Mercedes states (somewhat emphatically) throughout their documentation that the 2 items (TCU and valve body) must be upgraded (from 2003 set to 2004 and later set) as a pair, however, some members have stated that they have swapped only one or the other with no ill effect.

whether or not this update (in 2004) can be equated to increased "beefiness" is debatable ... although it is commonalty accepted that the the bluetop solonoids are synonymous with firmer shifts.

I upgraded my 2003 sl55 (same valve bodies and TCUs as E55, just different variant coding) with a valve body and TCU from a 2004 E55 (in order to get the paddle shifting in all modes and the "blue tops") .... works for me.

hope that helps,
Chris

had another thought ... just guessing since I can't see the context you saw. Perhaps the perception of "beefier, preferred or stronger", was not compared to earlier E55 xmissions, but instead, compared to their non-amg counterparts, the 7 speed. At that time, there were folks asking why the AMGs weren't getting the 7 speed and the answer from those in the know was that the 5 speed was .... "beefier, stronger, etc .."
