Wavetrac LSD Setup
#26
Thanks, I'm just rolling dice in the event someone has an assorted few laying about I could have some on hand and not have to stop the job to order a shim I need. And wait..
I'm in the planning stages right now. I am a machinist so if I need thinner I'll take it into work and surface grind it. If not I'll order.
I like your spreader and I'll be fabbing one also.
I have read reports of the Wavetrac failing but reading between the lines I bet they don't set preload, they don't even mention a spreader, and if they do, its negated it by setting backlash moving shims only on one side.
Your post is the only one I have seen spreading mentioned or posted be it video or written.
Thanks, Again,

Are you only doing the diff swap and keeping the gears the same? I've been trying to figure out how people set the pinion depth on these units but I keep coming up blank.

I found mine. The part number is A2309940241 and they measure 4.42mm thick. You can try finding them at a dealer, but if I recall right they had to come from Germany. I don't remember what I paid. If you are still in the planning phase, you might want to just order a pair of the thickest ones Wavetrac has and be ready to machine them if needed.
If you get in a bind, we could work something out where you could use mine, but I will want them replaced since I may need them at some point.

Thanks! Great pics! Thats all I need..........
Before I confess please know if you came to my world asking for help I would give it regardless of the vehicle or what your pulling wrenches on.
I am changing the open gear set in my 2013 Dodge Charger's HAG215 Differential to a Wavetrac 48.309.185 WK, the same as yours perhaps. The 226mm Getrag units most MOPAR LD/LX owners worship whine and wear the clutches out.
I'm doing a refresh back there, WT LSD, axles, hubs.
She's Supercharged and much loved and cared for. And I have had the pleasure of raising the eye brows on some scoffing MB would-be passers by. Heh.She doesn't show it just looking at her. Its an Edelbrock E-Force 2300 TVS @7psi.
If its OK I would like to post back how my diff conversion goes with pics. I'm laid up right now with a fractured kneecap but am planning and collecting.
The Ride
EDIT!! Changing the 04 Digit to 02 changes the thickness! 03 didn't work so it may be even numbers only! Also found a list here. https://bit.ly/3kFe3tF . your number led me to what I need! Great Thanks!

Setting ring gear depth, or more like the pinion depth is done via a crush washer or spacer on the pinion. Talking to Unitrax (gounitrax.com) these boxes are pretty good and no matter the miles the ring gear bearings are rarely in need of replacing. The pinion bearing if anything is the one if they have found but its not a problem per say. They really like the Wavetrac in these boxes, and Wave track is 20 miles from their shop. But shipping to & from CA to GA and his labor will not allow me to be lazy.
Mercedesoutletcom has the rings for 5.90 to 6.81 each.

I love that we have some crossover between Mercedes and Chrysler for that generation of vehicles, especially the NAG1/722.6. One of my next projects will be to figure out how to put an SFI rated flexplate on the M113k engine. Do you Mopar guys have a source for SFI flexplates?
As for the pinion depth, I'm not so much worried about how to set it, as I am about how to measure it, or how to know what it should be if I get a used set of gears. I assume a new set would come with the pinion depth noted in the documentation. It may be a moot point anyway, as I have 3.55's in my CLK now and they'll probably stay there.

I'll post up an SFI Flex Plate inquiry on the boards I visit and come back.
So for $75.00 I can have peace of mind when I bench mine I can keep the job moving with a stack-o-shims on the ready. I'll be putting new ring gear bearings on so I'm not expecting the OE shims to be dead on.
A quick search on a Challenger board found this 2011/2012 post. Speedlogix vendor seems out of business now. But this shows there was such an animal. I'll post up and wait for current times replies and come back.
Thanks.
We have a new option for a SFI 29.1 Approved flexplate for the HEMI LX, LC! This one comes from B&M and it's in stock, available to ship now!
Fits Hemi 5.7L and 6.1L engines including automatic Challenger, Charger, Magnum, 300C with HEMI motors.
(Does not fit MOPAR truck applications.)
* SFI 29.1 approved, NHRA/IHRA legal for all classes (Chevrolet & Chrysler).
* SFI certification sticker included (recertification required every 3 yrs.).
* Ideal for street applications to extreme duty racing and high (above 6,000) rpm use.#7 • Jan 18, 2012 B&M flex plates are in stock! Here's mine next to my Pro-Torque 2800 stall converter which are both going in tonight!

Go HERE and type flex into the search box at the top. Its a start but you may have to inquire of the MFG about your application bolt patterns and OD and such.

Just an FYI I can tell you pinion depth is real interesting from diff to diff. I am putting in 3.06 gears into my car and had a few other diffs purchaced for gears and shims/parts. Every differential...my original 2005, a dodge Durango 2011, Jeep cherokee 2010 and 2011 all with 215mm and all have the exact same pinion shim !! How is that possible ? I also have some side shim/snap rings if needed and can measure them up for anyone to have.

Maybe the manufacturing tolerances have just gotten really good over the years. Of all those gears, did any of them have pinion depth marked on them in any way? I think Ford 9" gears tend to have it stamped on the end of the pinion. Or maybe that's just for aftermarket sets? I have no idea if they even specify a measurement for our setups.

I'm still here. My shims arrive tomorrow (from Germany). But in the mean time I had a flip flop change of heart. I landed a used 226mm Getrag for the Charger for $300.00, took it down upgrading the clutches to the GM Z06 packs. Got it buttoned up thinking about the difference in the two types of diffs and have flip flopped again back to the Wavetrac.
I just don't like the "locked all the time" thing until it has to give in the tight stuff. Its got the be a pain in the wet or snow. And now with the better clutches, 7 frictions instead or 3.................
I want to ask about the gear oil type, weight and brand you guys use in your WaveTrac'd 215mm diffs?
Thanks
A Show & Tell comparison in the MOPAR 226mm Getrag (G648) Differential Clutches and the Z06 Getrag Clutches.

My Wavetrac came with a bottle of Motul. I’ll have to see if I still have the bottle in the garage because I don’t remember the weight.

My ring and pinion, pinion bearings and spider gears will be ack soon from 300 Below Cyogenics and should be bullet proof. Also anything that is not perfect in spec due to lack of Mercedes specs to go by will / should not hurt anything due to the treatment for longevity on the parts....bearings will last double there life. Used gears are a little tuff to get exactly where there pattern used to be LOl.

Thanks on the lube pic. I found a MOPAR M215 parts drawing and list of parts that may help some. I'm not sure what will happen when trying to order but they are listed. Pricey. And the shims too.

I have a 2nd 215mm diff in my ratio 3.06 coming to me from a friend who did the to 226mm Getrag conversion. So I'll build it on the bench to Wavetrac.
I sold the Getrag I upgraded the clutches in for a $180.00 profit on eBay in less than 12hrs.
When I confirm the pinion is OK in the gifted Diff I'll start ordering the bearings and Wavetrac.
