E63 Engine Noise

Took my car to the dealer regarding a power steering whine noise. Dealer found issues and confirmed pump is bad. Also told him about a strong ticking coming from my engine bay. Lifters probably. He called the warranty company and they said they require a teardown to see the issue. Dealer calls me back and says we have to teardown the engine to show the warranty company when they stop by. It's a 11 hour job and will roughly cost $2,000. He said if warranty comes and doesnt approve of it, then I am liable for that 2k. Wtf.... I also said to myself 2k to teardown and 2k to rebuild? Are these guys serious....? I'm going to have to call them tomorrow and say no I'm not ok with the teardown and just let it go. There is no way I'm risking a possible 4k diagnosis only for the warranty to come and deny me. What should I do??

Does your warranty require you to go to the stealership? I'm just genuinely curious. I would think any competent indy MB shop could submit/write up a claim to the warranty company you have, given that there are now 9 years of aggregate data since the M156 was sold in the U.S. market. How many miles do you have?

This is the first time I'm taking it to a stealership. I always used to take it to indys but I have had nothing but bad luck with them. They dnt do a full job and always **** my car up. I have never had any luck with any indy. Warranty doesn't require me to go to a dealership. The car has 75k miles.

I've had indy not replace e55 crank pulley bolt. It's a 1 time use bolt and they reused it.

I've had indy not properly bolt my caliber. While driving on freeway, it flew out.

I've had indy put on a used alternator and me be stuck on the freeway and later them saying it wasn't 'charged' properly only to find out they replaced the used one with the new one they ordered day ago.

Good times...

That is very unfortunate. Here in Silicon Valley, there are a couple of indy shops that are very highly regarded.

Personally I would go to a competent indy shop specializing in MB and the M156 - even if it meant driving a couple of hours away. Given the cost of what the dealership is quoting, it's worth it - unless you don't plan to keep your E63 for a while.

Good luck and I hope things work out.

Thank you. I suppose you are a software engineer like myself, only I reside close to silicon beach.

Cool!

I had an ex-coworker who moved out to LA and he takes his AMG to http://www.autobahnmotorgroupoc.com/. I've never heard of any complaints from him about that shop - not sure how far you are from them, but it's worth a shot.

I've had Audi Service Advisors tell me the same thing. If they don't know for certain a problem exists to warrant a recall/warranty job...if they do the initial work and it was false I would have to pay for those fees.

if you initiate the tear down...and comes back false you pay.

if the mechanic feels there is an issue, he will generally tell the service advisor they should tear it down. at that point they cover everything, but generally is if he is certain there is an issue. factory issued warranty/recall jobs pay something like 80% labor, so mechanics make less money doing warranty/recall work. if you have an outside warranty company I'm sure they pay standard labor rates.
