Strange Problem starting car

Strange Problem starting car
2000 E55 68K mi
Went to start car last night,and it would fire, but then quit after letting go of the key. Did this 4 or 5 times, same result. I shifted to Neutral, and the car did start and run. Shift back to P and all seems fine now. Any idea what was going on?
