i have never seen a new tb go bad but I only work up to factory spec meaning all stock cars and the tbs have never been removed or messed with until it gets an intake manifold lie all the 272/273s (I assume everyone is using one of these as am I).I personally have not replaced 1 in a decades time and I have only seen 1 that needed replacement by another techand it was an sl55 that would get an surging idle back and forth constantly with no throttle response just the plate moving back and forth. It's rare we see anything modded at the dealership level. I'm a new age tech so yea, we don't quite know everything the old dogs do and I'm sure you've seen more than I. I don't have an engineering background so my skill set is just grease monkey level ![Big Grin](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
You being aftermarket and custom work I can imagine you've seen some failures. What kind of failures have you seen?
I just can't see all these tbs being bad. Please enlighten me, I don't think I'm too smart to take advice.
i have the bolt on vrp adapter using the mb sealant to seal both ends. I have removed it and went back to stock and have no issues since.
ideally I should try a new in box one but that would be a special order and well yea, we need to set some limits here lol

bad is in after about 20 seconds of idling it would start either idling really high or die. It would also throw multiple codes and when you pressed the gas pedal would not operate at all (I tested the TB operation with the car off and the TB butterfly valve would literally not move during the test in STAR). It was as bad as one can get.

Is this the hiccup that happens in sport mode when you go on and off the throttle at lower rpms? Or is it worse? Because I don't find that to be that annoying.

Not to go on another tangent, but what about the accelerator pedal assembly itself? I've seen in previous threads that some people had resolved their issues with new pedals. If the innards of the pedal housing is a standard wiper arm potentiometer, then over time cruising at light throttle the spot in that track could be worn down and delivering higher resistance than the surrounding area. Same thing happens with old BMW airflow meters that measure air intake with a flapper door. I know there is a test in STAR to check voltage delivered at different throttle positions, I just haven't gotten around to it.

I'm starting to think you can fix it slightly by adjusting the tip in throttle and maybe adding a touch of fuel in that low rpm table.
Every ecu is different some are more prone to others to get meaning sensitive .It's not the gap of the clutch so it's not that it's more so aiming to fine tune it.
You need to find a tuner who will work with you and has the patience to perfect it.

I had a chance to play around with the car again to see if I can get anywhere. When I bought the car it came with two tunes from Anthony L., One was a dyno tune which I had been using, and one was labeled SL55 Stock tune, and I'm told it's the stock mapping from the later model SL with the bigger TB. I loaded that in and over the first two days the drivability was pretty good. On my way to work this morning it started bucking again in traffic so now I'm back to square one. I didn't reset anything in star beforehand but now I'm wondering if I should have.
Next on the list is remove/reseal supercharger and charge pipe gaskets, at the same time replace the MAP sensor with the latest version.

Somewhat similar issue.. I upgraded to the 82mm TB (MB) and matching snout. After that, the car started to misfire are run super rich to the point where it soiled all my sparkplugs. I replaced them all and was told it was a bad map sensor. After changing the map sensor we realized the car was running rich due to the 82mm TB staying at WOT at idle. Idle was also very low. When I revved it, the car would hesitate and then take a while for rpms to drop after they went up. Does this sound familiar to anyone??

sounds like either a bad TB or that the plugs between the TB and bypass TB are switched around (they are the same plug)

When changing the tb you really have to know what your doing !!I see 10 out of 10 tb install with issues due to user install etc .To be honest, it's worth the 15hp if that,or maybe less whp for these headaches .Let a pro install that like a dealer or a real euro shop and let them deal with the headaches after to blame for it ,if the install was wrong .

Thats very true. Car just came back from the dealership to install it. They are the ones who installed it, and it ran ok, but when I took it to the high performance shop to install a meth injection kit, all of hell broke loose. That would make sense if that was the problem.

From what I understand too the 82mm TB bolt holes don't line up to the supercharger snout correctly in the first place, so I'm surprised they didn't drop it right there.

I have a friend that works at the Mercedes dealership locally as a technician that I handed the part to directly but when it was installed, the car started to hiccup a day or so later and I got a little annoyed with them when they told me there’s nothing they can do. That is probably the reason behind why they don’t want to touch it again unless it’s the OEM part. But yeah, I took it to mercedes to install the TB, then I took it to the performance shop to install the meth and aftermarket intake and that is where my problems began.

My car does not have the stock snout, I bought the TB with a matching snout. I bought the kit from Demetre (which I heard was a big mistake) but before I go and buy a new TB, I want to confirm that that’s what is truly wrong. The shop confirmed no leak through the smoke test, so I am trying to narrow down possible problems at this point.

My mb will install anything you want as long as it's a bolt on part they will guarantee the work but not the part.was quoted 650 for tb install that as great deal if you ask me.Dont like monkeys touch these e55 all your going to get is problems !
