Drag Radial Sizes
I'm looking in to a set of drag radials for this season. I found MT no longer makes a 265 40 18 drag radial. It was perfect for the 211 on stock wheels. A 285 40 18 is the closest. This is the Mickey Thompson S/S that took the place of the ET Street.
Has anyone tried this tire yet? I believe Nitto makes the NT05R in 265 35 18. Does anyone have experience with either of these tires? I'm looking to keep a stock wheel on the car.

With stock wheels, nt05r and nt555r should hook just fine. You'll love them. Based on budget nt555r are a little cheaper then the nt05r. There are a few reviews on both tires on youtube. Scope them out and take your pick.

Try the hooisers link below, I think the 285s will be too tall and too heavy with the possibility of rubbing. If its performance you want and not looks, they should do the job, just play around with the pressure, they should hook fine. I liked the 265s too, they did the job.

I actually forgot about Hoosier but I'm going to looks as well. I'm sure that 245 would do the job, but it might look goofy. I'll look more in to the Nittos.

If you really want to hook up then 16's is the size you want. In any drag tire of any size you need side wall size. That's the number one thing. 18's of any kind won't hook like ave 16 dr. They have to crinkle that's how it works

But that only applies to bias ply tires...? I don't think you'd want drag radials to crinkle...

^ Yes, drag radials will flex their sidewall and are designed as such.
OP, another tire to check out would be the Toyo R888. While not a true drag radial, they are about as close as you can get, and they are available in 275/35/18.

Where is that picture of your car doing a 60', when it looked like a bundle of bannanas ?

Sorry I'm not adding any value to this thread, but I couldn't resist posting one of my favorite pictures of my car!

Nice wrinkle to both. What pressure do you run? Do the Hoosiers have that much of a softer sidewall, compared to the Mickey Thompsons, to allow so much wrinkle without spinning the tire on the rim? Or do you have to bolt them to the rim to get that bite?

05-e55....Iol, I love it!
Racehorse, I had my Hoosiers screwed on the inside lip only. Pressure was between 22-25 lbs., always trying to target the highest pressure while maintaining a dead hook. I do believe the sidewall is softer on the Hoosier, as well they are a lighter tire iirc.

Mine are not screwed at all. I normally run 15-17psi but I have been as low as 12psi. Now that I have a Wavetrac I'll try raising the pressure to see how it affects my 60'

Thanks for the response, I have been running the 265/40/18 MTs in the low 20 lb range, anything more and they spin around 50 ft off the line as the turbos builds torque. They don't have much life left and I want to run Hoosiers, but I'm limited to 18" wheels unless I swap rear brakes.
Based on my last outing and the cars weight, I think the 245/40/18s will be too narrow and spin. That leaves the 315/30/18, but it will be a tight fit in width with not alot of sidewall. It would be nice if they made a 295/35/18 hooiser.

Racehorse, sounds like you already researched this but I'll throw another tire into the mix. I believe the nitro nt05r is available in a 285/40/18.
The slight increase in width and height over the MT might be just what you need. It's at least worth investigating.

Thanks, MT also makes a 285/40/18 now, but it's almost a 27" tall tire I was hoping to stay closer to 26, besides the weight, I'll check if the nittos are lighter and how it compares in traction to the good ol' boys brands. Either way I'll need wider wheels than the 8.5" I've been using.
