Need help with valve cover gaskets and breather cover
So I'm doing my Volvo covers and spark plugs as we speak. I'm having a hard time getting the breather covers off on the passenger side. I read not to pry it off with a screwdriver, but I can't seem to get it to budge. I know its leaking there so I want to make sure I get it done as well. Also any tips on getting the driver side off. Got everything out of the way, but the actual valve cover doesn't
Want to come off for some reason... All the bolts are removed, can i tap it with a rubber mallet? TIA
These covers are made of magnesium and don't exactly enjoy being jolted around. In my many forays into re-sealing the covers I have always had great success with using a metal pick and a plastic brush handle as a wedge.
Use the pick to run through the outer edges of the RTV seal to help loosen its grip.
Then gently wedge the back end of the brush handle between the breather barb and valve cover.
Apply force in a steadily increasing manner and you should start to hear the sealant give way (sounds like it's sucking air). Keep the pressure consistent until you have enough room to use your hands.
The metal pick comes in handy for clearing the sealant trough as well.
