Question 2001 E55 - Thoughts?

Looking at used '01 E55 AMG with 23k miles.
Any thoughts on what I should expect to pay? Should I even be considering 3yr old car?
btw - it's a Designo Edition.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Low to mid 40's unless it's Starmarked ... that will add 3 to 5 grand.

Why worry about 3 years old? You have 25,000+ or a year in warranty left.

I bought one with 12k miles and so far, so good. YMMV.

I love my '01, and I've got 34K miles on it. Mine has a Starmark warranty until '08 and 100K miles. I'll sell it before the warranty runs out & get an '05 or '06 Starmarked E55 (E60 - E65??). I saved over $28K off MSRP.

Selling my 01

I have a 2001 E55 for sale if you are interested. I bought it new in Feb 01 from the dealer.

Awesome car but want a convertible now.

Silver with silver black interior. 34k miles. Ventilated Seats and CD changer are the options. Original sell price was just under $73k.

Have mine on Autotrader for $43,500 (reduced from $44,900). A StarMark car will get 49-51. But mine has almost a year still left on the warranty, plus an extended warranty is much cheaper that 6 grand!

Send me an email if interested kcvette@iwon.com

I am north of north of Detroit, MI. (48359)

I bought my 01 e55 in 12/02 with 1600 miles for 64K all option but phone/navigation. I traded it for an 04 e55 and dealer gave me 31K with 32000 miles. I tried to sell in private but didn't have any serious takers. If you search you should find a good 01 for under 40K (in the mid 30's).

I can tell you, as the owner of a 2001 E55, all of my problems showed up at 24,000 - my current (32,000 miles). My car has been in the shop for a total of 3 months in the last year and it is still not fixed. You name it, from CD player skipping, to rear sunshade not operating, to the most critical - my steering and suspension woes. I will never buy a Mercedes again.

arazvi - could you describe the steering and suspension woes?

I've had CD problems (but mostly the radio stating "NO CD Player" - on my 3rd radio).

thanks

2 years ago my radio/Comand will have no CD message also. The dealer changed the PSE module and everything is OK since.

My suspension woes started with the front swaybar popping out of position. It had to be re-seated twice (the second time with lock-tight). Then the steering began to get very sloppy with huge amounts of play in the wheel. They told me it was tire related (had SO-3's on there) and so I replaced them with original equipment Pilot Sports. No change in suspension/steering issues.

So they replaced the rack/pinion (under a recall due to them putting in the wrong steering grease and not because it would solve my problem) and that didn't solve the problem. So then I had them replace the struts and that didn't solve the problem.

The car feels like its driving on marshmellows for suspension and I can't seem to trace the problem. Brand new Pilot Sports and the car feels like it is floating around rather than firmly planted to the road.

In addition, a nagging pull to the right (at speed over 15MPH) and vibration in the steering column at between 40-50MPH. The dealership has had my car for a total of two months in the last 12 months and "claim" to have gone over the car head to toe and everything is "factory specification".

I should note: it is MOST noticeable when the car has been sitting in the sun and the components are warm. Mornings are obviously much stiffer due to cold. I think they test drive it in the morning, which also may be the problem.

I am tired of them, they are probably very tired of me and so I am close to filing a Lemon Law action.

No real problems at 34k

Had mine for over 3 years now, 2001.

Only problems I've had in 3 years were all are minor and were repaired under warranty:

1) pinhole in the A/C line.
2) sweaky seat adjuster

This is the best quality car I've ever bought, solid as a bank vault. Can't tell you how many times I had my Chrysler 300M in the shop in the 3 years before I bought this.

Still runs like a champ.

Okay...still have it

How about $40,900? See link in above post.

Depressing that this car was $78k out the door in 2001 and is worth perhaps half 3 years later. ****E!

One of the deciding factors to buy (other that it is a great car) was the tremendous resale back in 2001. 99's and 00's were selling only a few grand under MSRP because of high demand and a year long wait list.

Lesson learned: times change and never think of a new car as a good investment!

At least the big hit in depreciation has already occured, should show only modest declines going forward.
