Stalled out ...

I was behind another car that was signaling a right turn into a mall and I was going about 10 mph. The E just died the instant I started to pull around him to the left. To get out of the traffic, I turned into the mall too and with no power steering, I barely missed another car leaving the mall.

The car rolled to a quick stop after going over the curb cut, so I’m not sure how much the brakes were working. There were no warning lights and it started right up again with the display showing reserve gas and 37 miles left to go. Was this caused by the gas pickup location or do I have more to be concerned about?

My guess is that your lateral transition exposed the fuel pickup causing fuel starvation and engine cutout. Modern fuel systems run a lot of fuel through them and it does not take much to cause the engine to die.
I had a similar thing happen to a Cadillac that I had. I was on reserve and made a brisk left turn and the engine cut out. Once I was going straight again it worked fine. Needless to say I beelined for a fueling station.
I don't belive that you have a problem though.

I knew I was running low and after reading an x-crossing post about having at least 1/4 tank of gas I didn’t think that my little blip to the left could kill the engine, but it seems it doesn't take too much with not enough.

After the cut-off, I was more surprised that not one light in the dash was on, not even the display in the speedometer.

Was anything electrical working (radio, turn signals, etc.) or did just the engine quit?

As mels says Sounds like it may be electrical ? with the no lights showing.

I quite often run my S down to single figure range and a couple of times till the display shows nothing (still has just under a gallon left) and have never had this trouble, even when throwing the car about.

It was daylight, the radio wasn’t on, and I didn’t have time to signal. Now I’m not sure if the brakes worked or the engine, still in drive, stopped the car. There is a hydraulic backup, right?

Would there be a record in the computer even if there was no malfunction display?

You are right about the hydraulic back up system. I don't know if it would set a code or not. You might just call your service advisor and ask if there are issues, such as D-5 reported.

This has happened several times to me. MB changed my plugs and wires and blew out some carbon deposits in the cylinder heads, or so they claimed. That was a month ago and everything was running great until I stalled last week. My stalling was never related to low fuel levels.

My clk died once making a left turn also. Except I had a full tank of gas. after I mad the turn I tried hitting the pedal and realized nothing was happening. I looked and the instruments clusters were off but command still working. I turned the key off and back on then it worked. It had 8,000 miles at the time. Nw it has 31,000 and it never happened again. Everyone was saying it was probably a gas bubble or contamination. I dunno.

Mercedes E55 AMG 2004
Hi!! I think the exact same thing happened to my 04 E55 too!! I was stopped at a set of traffic lights signalled to turn right, as soon as the lights change I moved off slowly since the traffic was quite bad...and half way through the turn the car stalled and died.........seeing all your messages I guess this is a common problem...I was running a full tank at the time.....
