Replacing Motor Mounts
im trying to replace my mount & trans mounts. I have long tube headers and the top bolt of the motor mounts is in direct contact with the headers.
I don't see how I can get the bolt out without removing the headers
any ideas? has anyone with LT headers changed there mounts themselves without removing the headers?

if the header is touching the mount bolt then that's probably the reason the mount went bad as it got too hot -- need a heat shield and more clearance or it will just happen again -- just sayin --
as to your question, if you can't get a wrench on it, I think there is a specialty merc motor mount wrench or you can cut it out with a torch and probably catch car on fire or remove the header -- bad design or bad install ?

i read your DIY post , some good pointers in there.. i can reach the top bolt with my hand from top of motor or from under the car, my issue is that the i can not get a socket onto to the bolt because of the header

this might be what i need to do then i can move the motor up and raise the headers enough to access the bolt .
i can reach 3 of the bolts easily, but the 4th bolt on the top rear looks very hard to reach

What headers do you have on the car I am curious...
I will go through this shorty once I get finished rebuilding my trans
Making a neat pile of info for those reading

finally finished this job with my bud over the weekend. PITA . took about 3 hours.
did not touch sway bar.
passenger side was straight-forward. unbolted mount bracket.
dropped steering rack . pushed engine up, pulled full assembly out. installed new mount to bracket with top bolt then put full assembly back in . drivers side was a ***** . mount is attached to ac compressor , couldn't remove mounting bracket from car but disconnected all bolts, removed tension off belt and moved engine up enough to have room to remove top bolt , removed mount only through passenger side & put in new mount
night & day difference with vibrations in the cabin
i do not want to do this again anytime soon.. i had to read a post in an old about strapping down engine to keep strain off mounts ..i will definitely look into this . i did see a cross bar on VRPs site

Good for you. My car is currently at the dealership right now, getting the fuel tank and pump replaced under the warranty. I was told that I need the engine mount replaced, and will cost me about $2,200 to replace it, and another $2,300 to fix the rear main seal. LOl. Do they really cost that much to fix?

shop manual says 6.5 hrs to change all 3 mounts . lets just assume a ridiculous labor rate of $200 /hr ..that comes out to $1300 ..total cost of parts at full MSRP direct from mercedes is $361 ...so a grand total of $1,661 ..this stealership is

Headers or not, exhaust needs to be moved for ease of mounts removal and replacement. All 211 cars are like this.

if I had stock headers, i can't imagine this whole job would've taken more than an hour. the vast majority of time was spent on extra work to access the top bolt due to the design & position of my headers
