E55 Motor Mount

Hi guys,

My E55 had some weird in-cabin vibrations yesterday, and after removing the bottom plastic shields, sure enough there was motor mount (hydraulic) fluid all over on the driver's side. I drove the car today and the vibration got slightly worse, but it's nothing terrible. The engine isn't moving too much when revved.

How long can I drive on this for? As a DIYer without an engine crane/lift and only jack stands, is this something I can do? Or do I need to go to shop?

Fix it when you can. No big hurry.

Not sure about an E55, but the exhaust had to be dropped on my E63 to swap them out. It's a not fun DIY thing, do a search on here.

Thanks for the replies guys. I've seen people take out the mounts by only removing the steering rack, so I may attempt that. Worst comes to worst, exhaust comes off. I'm not afraid to get my hands a bit dirty (;

I was already upgrading to a CLS63 steering rack when I did mine, you will either need to loosen the steering rack up to where it is free sitting on a jack stand or do the same with the sway bar to create room. One of those along with jacking the motor up a few inches will get it done. like above it took me about 3hrs to install the new rack/mounts. It is definitely doable at home with a few wrenches(E16 or E18, 16mm gear wrench I think), jack and at least 3 jack stands

Just be happy you don't have Long Tubes, it made it a little more challenging lol

Welp I used the steering rack method, and it worked! Was quite difficult, though. Took me about 6 hours to do. Any of you guys know how long these mounts normally last? Here's the dead one:

Honestly it really depends on
A) how much you beat on your car
B) if you used OEM replacement part #

Use a tie down strap or there is a thread with part numbers for using metal cable straps to make it the last set you install as it will never flex enough to stress/tear the part up again
