E55 Snow Tires

Hi guys,

I've done a decent amount of Googling and searching here on the forums, but haven't found a direct answer. Maybe I just suck at searching

For stock W211 AMG rear wheels, what snow tires are a good choice? I currently have ExtremeContact DWS06's all the way around, but I'm looking for snow tires to put on the rear.

I'm a big fan of Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2. If you can find 'em in the size you need, don't have any qualms about buying a set.

I have a full set of stocks with brand new snow tires on front and about 1000 miles on the rear. Looking to sell the set. There 245-40 front and rear. No problem fitting on stock rear wheels.

2006 E55 AMG Wagon
Have Nokian Hakkas on my '06 E55 Wagon, and they work fine. They are not available with studs, as I suspect the speed potential doesn't allow it. Cost was about $200 each, mounted.

Consider snow tires front and rear, you won’t regret it.

^this.
Sure makes it easier to turn a corner and not go in a straight line when the front end can hook up as well as the back.

Right. There are obviously 3 considerations in driving: going, turning, and stopping. Snows only on the rears only addresses the first on that list. Having said that I've known a few people in the F-body community who've done this (because most of them are broke), and they were happy with the results. If the car is your DD, then having snows in the rears is better than nothing.

As far as brands, I've always been a fan of the Michelin X-ICE XI3's and the General Altimax Arctics. Not sure if they make either for our wheel sizes though. Maybe check Tire Rack.

Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated. I'm a complete tire noob, what is the exact size I should get for the rear on my stock wheels?

If you are on 18inch stock wheels 245/40/18 front and rear. Narrowish tires cut through snow better, if you are on a budget go cheaper tire but front and rear. Any snow tire will be a huge improvement over all season. Tirerack.com has several choices in this size.

Yokahama Iceguard $560 plus shipping for four after rebate. If that seems too much you haven’t been driving an E55 very long, lol.

Perfect, this is what I was looking for, thank you. And this size will work even with the rear wheels being wider than the front (stock setup)? Like I said, tire noob

Yes, it is straight from the tirerack website. But to be safe, I would call and talk to a salesperson to verify.
