E55 vs E63
Hey y'all, so I know how to use the search button and I'm aware this has been spoken about but NOT RECENTLY. I'm in the market for a car and if you have been following value, u can now get an e63 cheaper than an e55. There are also a lot more e63 on the market too. Now I build cars and trucks for a living and it will not stay stock for long. So I'm wondering, how is the reliability on the cars. I've heard the 55 is more reliable and easier to mod thanks to the blower. But if I spend 5k to get 700hp on an e55, is there a turbo kit for the 63 that's not astronomical. Or maybe cams or something? And how much less reliable is the 63. Also is there any noticeable differences between the cars other than the motor and body kit. (Only speaking of the w211) Now that they are about the same cost and people have some miles racked up I assume there's a few 200k 63s that can chime in too. I know that the 55 can last a very long time. Thanks.

don't get me wrong I love my E55. Both the E55 and E63 are great cars and can be modded for an easy 60-100hp. While the sky is the limit, if you want an easy reliable 700+up, you should really look at a LS motor

you can absolutely get a 2009 or 10 with less than a hundred thousand miles on it for under 25 now

I had the same considerations when looking for my CLS. I ended up going with the 55 even though they are less common here, especially since they only had a short production in the CLS. I decided that the gearbox for the 63 didn't seem as ready to handle additional power without upgrading and that the e55 has way more cheap bolt on/upgrade solutions. Ultimately I decided that if I was to add power to the 63 which may cost more, I'd have to spend even more on the transmission so it can hold up to the daily abuse. I have thrashed my car every day I've had it for the past year, only issues I've had are the fuel pump (replaced) and alternator (replaced). I replace sensors (IAT, MAP, o2) preventative. Things that aren't so good: 5 Speed isn't enough gears, heat soak is really annoying and I THINK 1st gear shift sometimes cuts power for a splitsecond at WOT because the wheels are moving at different speeds (need limited slip diff). Also on right-hand drive car's exhaust work is a pain. Of all my mods they have been the most hassle requiring fine tuning to get right.
The only issue I know of for the 63 engine is the head-bolt issue, but that can be addressed to prevent it. I feel like if your going to smack an exhaust on it and tune then call it a day the 63 would be a better solution. If you're going to mod and get addicted and not stop (most e55 modders) I'd go with the 55.
Hope that helps

Your $25k budget won't get you far with modding an E63. Typically if you want to mod go with an E55, if you're going to leave it mostly stock get an E63.

E55 for sure if you are going to modify. Not bashing the 63 (I have a 63) but there are many more options available for a much lower cost with the 55 than the 63. The cosmetic facelift from the 55 to 63 like the front bumper can be taken care of easily with a conversion (and possibly the side view mirrors but I’m not sure). I personally was not looking to modify so I went with the 63.

You won't get far with 5k of mods on a NA E63 and you will be short of 700HP on the E55 platform too. No turbo kits are available for either without getting into huge $ and lots of headaches. Biturbo is the way to go or accept the limitations of the E55 which are still pretty spectacular depending on your point of view.

VRP has a claimed 700(crank) hp kit for about 5k. Realistically it will be replacing my daily, wich is a super gay 2014 Hyundai Elantra. So they will both feel fast for a daily. BUT I have owned a lot of cars for a 20 year old and build them for a living , so I've driven a lot of fast (mostly fords) with 5-800hp and obviously its fun. From what I've seen a full bolt ons and a good turn can get me 600hp on a 63 and the VRP has a 2500$ 600 hp kit too. So I know what can be done to the car and thanks for all the answers. I'm really more concerned with reliability, creature comforts of the two. And also I have been lookin around a lot at prices and they are the same, and also like a 2012 c63 is under 20k now. So is the newer c nicer than the w211. I know its a harsher ride but I'm interested more in the interior. So what has the best reliability and interior. I can change the power as I wish, not too worried about it.

E55 is better for mods...the E63 will need a supercharger to be able to compete performance wise. At that point the E63 is a better performer but will require a supercharger and a transmission upgrade.

yea I think now I'm in between e55 and c63 just because it's newer. I gotta drive them both but e55s are so hard to find.

W211 is nice and comfortable with air suspension. perfect for me.
most W204 owners don't care about the above in comparison to the standard level of comfort associated with the W204. the W204 isn't for me...too dinky as I do carry 4 other adults with me from time to time.
