Well this sucks

So out of the blue the wife's car gets a flat but come to find out the wheel has 3 cracks in it. So I got that fixed and the tire was fine( the welder is a good shop, have used him for years and he knows what he is doing). Then a week later all the welds crack and the tire blows out. Wheel and tire are about 4 years old, and the tire has about 20k on it.

Has anyone seen this before or know why it all would have happened?

Do I just get a new tire and repair the wheel or just buy all new wheels and tires for the peace of mind.

And yes my wife drives like crap but none of our other cars have done this.

Sorry to here that. What size are the rims? They look quite large. Increasing the tire profile/decreasing the wheel size will make them a lot more resistant to cracking and bending. Unfortunately they will be prone to re-crack at the welds.

I’m not no genius. I don’t believe welds are good for wheels, they’re prone to crack again. They don’t have much durability, welds crack. Buy a new set for the heck of it, go out of you way to stay safe. Imagine driving on the highway at 70 and the wheel cracks again due to the stress on the road, bye bye to what you love if something goes wrong (not saying I want it to).

good luck sir

Thats too many cracks on one wheel man. I'd say one crack- repair it, if it cracks again get a new wheel. It's just not safe.

seems to me it Is very dangerous if anything does go wrong. It looks so unsafe I wouldn’t even spend money repairing. Get new wheels or just get one

I mean some wheels are just really rare and kinda expensive. If everyone with the CLS55 19" wheels threw theirs away after the first crack there would be none left on the market. All 4 of mine cracked, all 4 repaired. Only one re cracked and it was after a blowout. Since I got 18's stock and never looked back. Any wheel larger than 18 on these cars changes the car for the worse. I hated the way it rides and handles.

definitely understand. If it’s cracking again it kinda damages the structure more doesn’t it? The more it cracks the worse. Not sure if I’m right but it could be like glass, on crack will get bigger as time goes on. See if it was done right the first time it would be better but welding then the weld cracks again just ruined it more. I’m just using my common sense, I definitely may be wrong. But I see a single wheel for $750 on eBay, quite pricey.

To answer the op’s question, the rim might have hit a pothole or a big dip and cracked. She could’ve went over something, or something launched under the car and hit. So many possibilities, I don’t believe it would just crack out of the blue

Well back from my welder. He looked it over and told me I'm F'ed. Gave me my money for the weld job and said to get her some new wheels. He said with 3 cracks and that back spacing its just going to happen again. So off for new wheels I guess.

She said no, But I asked her when the check air pressure light came on and she said it didn't see it.............I'm glad she is pretty. (when I got in to move it in the garage the big red light was on the dash.)

When I bought my 2003 Mini Cooper S many years ago, it had after market wheels on it that had welded cracks, that I later found out about. I was getting low air pressure tire warnings, but never thought anything about it, until I discovered those crack welds.
I immediately bought a new set of wheels, and had better peace of mind. I've never experienced a catastrophic blowout, and never want to. Better safe then sorry. Buy new wheels, for peace of mind.

This is not ok. I would highly recommend you throw that wheel away, purchase a replacement. Do not let your wife drive on that wheel, the risk of failure with THREE cracks like that is insane, absolutely insane. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing that wheel was on my wife's car, hell no.

No, I'm not asking you to buy expensive super duper aftermarket wheels, this isn't a sales pitch obviously, but I would hope that our expertise on this subject would push you in the right direction of buying a new replacement wheel and throwing that cracked wheel away immediately over safety concerns.

Well just ordered new wheels an tires. So when I took off the other front wheel I found that wheel had 5 cracks in it. ****ty casing or she is smoking potholes just to **** me off. No more high end wheels for her.
