Hi..I have 2 cases left of the AMSOIL SAE5W-40 with the 229.51 specs from my previous VW I had. I know my E55 has the MB approval 229.5 instead. I didnt realize when I changed the oil a week ago, that it was the wrong oil. The bottles said European Car Formula, so I put it in my car. So my question is, should I drain this oil and put the correct oil with the 229.5 specs, or will my car run fine as is? Anyone else use oils with 229.51 without incident? Thanks.

I think it will be fine, but I'm not going to 100% guarantee it.

My understanding is that MB originally said that 229.51 ("low SPAsh") oil was fine for both diesel and gas, however, they have since removed the approval for use in gas engines in the US due to concerns over the quality of our gasoline (and perhaps the ethanol content). I believe 229.51 is still allowed in gas engines in some countries, but I could be wrong. The difference between 229.5 and 229.51 is that the 229.51 has less of certain additives (ash) to protect the exhaust emissions equipment in newer (2007+) diesels.

Despite the lack of official MB approval, I seriously doubt it will cause any problems in the span of one oil change, but if it were me, I would probably reduce the oil change interval a bit this time, rather than going the full 1 yr/10k miles.

AMSOIL? 5w40? You'll be more thank ok with it. That's the best oil to put in our m113k's, I wouldn't worry about the spec.

I put diesel oil in mine, Shell Rotella T6 5w40. People put it in their 911's.

Enjoy!

Thanks guys! I feel better after reading your replies. I change mine twice a year, or every 6k miles. So leaving the oil in the car long isnt an issue. Your comments are well appreciated.
