Supercharger Pulley shredded my engine bay
I was driving home on Friday and got a low coolant light. Didn't think much of it as just figured I'd check things once I got home. At any rate about 5 mins later I get out of my car to see a bunch of steam/smoke coming out of engine bay. Sure enough something on that pulley must have come loose and just weed whacked everything around it. There was coolant everywhere (seems like some oil as well), hoses, tubes, the plastic engine shroud and all kinds of crap just tore up. I'm really disappointed as although I bought the pulley 3.5 years ago or so, I only put on a bit over 14k miles on it. I just really expected more from this product. I do punch it at times (and most always just a quick jaunt up to 60-70) but for most part those miles were just me taking country roads to work and back.
This is going to be expensive I'm sure even with me fixing it myself and I'm sure it'll end up being down a while. Just really disappointed. Looks like I need to get a shop manual and start taking stuff off to see extent of damage. Man, really really bad timing for this too.

Damn bro, sorry to hear, and scary for sure... Ticking time bombs. Do you have a picture of the damage by any chance? Which pulley was it, if you don't mind sharing

I'll get some pics. Have been reading up on this more lately and now I know about the scatter shield. Unfortunately I didn't have one. I really don't want to go back to stock and lose some power so if I do again (as I hear there have been improvements in build quality, I'll need to verify) I'll definitely get one. I'm kinda hoping Eurocharged does something here. I've reached out to them on it. its been a few years, so not sure what I can expect, but so little miles and really not much abuse. That all said, not my typical experience with their products and they have made good on things in past.
You got one on yours tw2? You ever consider going to an 80mm or smaller? Need to do some research on all that as I'm hesitant to get into fuel system upgrades and not sure just when you need to do so on these cars (had a lot of trouble in past on other cars with tuning bigger injectors back in the day, not sure if a problem on these AMGs).

I've been trying to decide between a 77 vs 83mm SC pulley, and have done a fair bit or research on the two (fueling & cooling requirements, etc). General consensus is that a 77mm or smaller pulley will require the bigger 550cc injectors, although some guys run the 77 with stock injectors with no apparent issues. I'm not sure about the even larger injectors (750cc, etc).
I've heard of a few stock M113k injectors failing (even on completely stock motors). I guess it's expected with increasing age and mileage, so I don't think it's a bad idea to get new bigger injectors

My stock SC pulley failed with a guard attached. It broke a weld on the guard and then of course I had to fix hoses and the thermostat housing. I run fixed pulleys now just like most other SC equipped cars.

77mm has been fine for me on stock injectors. Its a bit lean (low 12's) at the top end (with my mods) but I'm okay with it. Been running for roughly 2 years without issues. What is annoying is the heat after like 4-5 hard pulls, even with split cooling and bigger EC HE its an issue (but I'm thrashing it..). For example on a 14c day I get 72c peak intake temp when on a tight circuit trackday. Car starts pulling timing at 50c I think and I'm pretty sure its pulling max timing at 68c+ so I need some more HE or water meth I think. But I overheat and melt the 'breaks' (lol w204) at the track so maybe its best I don't have peak power for the whole run...
EDIT: Bah just read its 35/45/65 for timing pulls of 3.5/6.3/9.5 degrees of crank angle respectively.

Yes I have a shield. My mods are in my signature below. I run an 83mm. I won't go smaller due to heat concerns and torque management issues. If I were after more power I would look at headers but definitely nothing else before better tires and a wavetrac.

One thing I have always wanted to know is how many people the shield has saved from destruction. I have only come across posts from a couple of people who have still experienced a complete mess despite having one.

DM me I have a scatter shield new in plastic from my old E55 i never got around to installing before she was totaled.
Pretty sure I have all the hardware, instruction sheet, everything. I just moved so it might take me a minute to find it all lol.
In a C63 now so I can't use it and it will save you in the future.

Do not risk your Car on cheap pulleys, We have never had one of our pulleys fail because we use heavy duty springs, but we STILL recommend a scattershield because these things can happen. We offer the original scattershield for $105, you can order it here

Scattershield was the first mod I did to this car. And I've seen at least a few people (not including cntrline) who said it reduced damage by like 95% vs had they not had one. The scattershield itself is usually a casualty.
I also check my pulley regularly. Probably works out to be every 300 miles or so, but also before and after every dragstrip trip. Between regular inspection and the scattershield, I have zero worries.
