First E55. A couple questions

Hey Guys, just bought my first mercedes. Its a 2006 E55 with 128k. Pretty loaded up with dynamic seats, keyless go, pano roof etc. It needs a little love but I got it for a good deal so i will pick away at it. I have a few questions:

1. Every time i open the drivers door, i can hear a buzzing which i have pinpointed to directly below the ashtray. Seems to run for a minute or two and then shut off any time a door is opened. Is this normal? What is it?
2. Keyless go does not appear to be working. The car had a completely dead battery when i bought it. Does something need to be re-trained or reprogrammed?
3. The radio navigation screen is messed up. I can source and OEM replacement for around $150. But i have seen some nice aftermarket android units as well. Are these plug and play with the fiber optics that are currently in the car?

Thanks for any help.

1. Fairly certain that is the SBC motor. Try opening the hood and then recreating the sound, it should be coming from that silver box on the passenger side of the engine compartment. It's normal.
2. Unfortunately I missed out on getting a keyless go car, so can't help you there.
3. The android head units seem to be hit or miss. Most say they work well after getting through some initial installation problems. They are supposed to be plug and play, but many require some custom fabrication to get everything working. You will also probably loose functionalities, a lot of people report that the steering wheel buttons stop working. Others seem to be able to get them just fine. If you want true plug and play, I would just get a factory replacement. But the android units add a lot of cool features. It really depends on what you want.

Congrats on the car, post some pics when you can

1. No idea

2. Which part of your Keyless Go is not working? The door handles often go bad with time and need replacement (costly). The switch in the gearshift has a wire that often gets torn and needs a quick fix (cheap and easy).

3. Most all of the aftermarket units have issues with the fiberoptics. By far, the most cost effective and reliable thing would be to replace with a used OEM headunit and add a Bluetooth adaptor.

What do the door handles have to do with keyless go? My door handles seem to be working fine. The keyless go button on the shifter just does nothing and does not start the car. Where is the torn wire located? Below the shift boot?

Common fault is broken wires to the start button, inside gear shift assembly:

Does the car unlock when you open the handle (by touching the black plastic part inside the outer handle)? And lock when you press the small black button on the outside? If so then I'd vote for the broken wire issue. If the handle isn't working either their could be other problems with the car not recognizing the key.

Hmm, havent tried that. I was wondering what those buttons are for. I'll try and report back. The keyless entry module starts the car, opens and locks the doors, and pops the trunk via the buttons with no issues.

Keyless Go, simply allows to lock/unlock and start the car without using any keys. But you must retain the key upon your person.

Well I have confirmed the buzzing is not the SBC. Its coming from directly under the radio and behind the ashtray. Seems to run for a longgggg time. My navigation screen is broken, wondering if maybe there is a problem with the radio? Is there any sort of pump or something back there that would be running even when the car is off and the key is out?

There is a hidden 6 Disc CD Changer, that resides below the radio. It could possibly be, that it's either trying to open or close itself, and the gears are stripped. Worth investigating to eliminate as a cause.

I need to replace the radio anyways since the screen is broken so i will investigate when that is out. Anyone know if all nav units from 03-06 are interchangeable? My car has XM radio and harmon kardon speakers. Does that matter or will any good OEM 03-06 unit just plug and play?

I would think that any OEM 03-06 unit would work. As I'm not aware of any changes done to the head units during that time frame.

Well made a small amount of progress last night. I pulled out the radio and confirmed the part number, I believe they are all the same but I found a guy selling one with the same PN as mine so I grabbed that. Should be here in a few days.

I also determined that the buzzing noise I am hearing appears to be coming from a module that is attached to the CD changer. Anyone know what this is? Maybe it is faulty? I also noticed that my cd changer door button does not work. I had to manually raise the door myself to see the cd changer.

I also noticed there are two un-used or not plugged in terminals on either side of my shift boot. Anyone know what these are for, or what should be plugged into them?

The box you see in the center of the top image is the motor that lifts the cover hiding the cd changer while also pushing the whole changer forward a little. When I bought my E55, the limit switch (small microswitch towards bottom of that image, marked T24) wasn't working, so the changer would constantly try lowering the cover and not realize it was at the end of its travel. Where are you at? I may have enough parts left over from experimenting with my cars, and could help get yours functional. As for the second image and the empty plugs, I think they're used when other options are included. I've been looking into adding Distronic to one of my cars, and I think the switch for that function plugs into one of the empty spots on the Airmatic switch.

Awesome, that makes sense why i constantly hear the motor running then. I am located in Boston MA. Id be happy to paypal you a few bucks if it turns out i need some parts and you can toss them in a flat rate box. Any idea how the CD changer is unplugged? One white plug did not appear to have a latch release and would not come out. I didn't want to break it but maybe I just need to pull harder

This was exactly what I was talking about.

I'll gather my spare changer and bits together when I get home and message you for more help. I need to be able to see it in front of me and I'm still at work for another couple of hours.

3. The radio navigation screen is messed up. I can source and OEM replacement for around $150. But i have seen some nice aftermarket android units as well. Are these plug and play with the fiber optics that are currently in the car?

I popped in a aftermarket head unit, installed by local sound shop for $900 bucks with rear camera (in 2016), Pioneer NEX4200 with Apple Car Play and does come with Android plug as well. Loved my Car Play! its like working your phone on your car screen! check it out. Shop took out fiber optic and rewired...

Welp, I guess that explains why the motor was always running, and also why the door didnt open, lol. Gear sheared right off in the drive. I wonder if i can buy just the motor. I didnt have time to look too close last night, but if i buy a used cd changer, is my faceplate (with my seat heater buttons and such) swapable to the new unit? Obviously so my interior will still match....

I can probably provide you with the parts you need to get it working again. As for changing out the switch panel or trim around it, that's a pain! It requires disassembling most of the unit to get to the tiny screws holding it all together.

Well hopefully I can replace just the motor! PM me if you have the motor and any other parts you might be willing to part with. Thanks!
